Can someone fill me in on the operation of the safety on the 92FS? The
"up" position is OFF right? Does this safety allow the gun to be carried
"cocked and locked" with the hammer back? Or is it only good for
preventing the trigger pull on the first DA shot? Also, after the first
shot, when the trigger is locked back in single action mode, can the
safety be put back on as a preventative to any further shots?

EMAIL me any info, please. And thanks in advance.

I own a 96FS, which is functionally identical to the 92FS. The
safety acts as a decocking lever when the hammer is cocked and prevents
the cocking of the hammer when the hammer is down. The trigger can be
pulled, but nothing happens. The Beretta 9XFS cannot be carried cocked
and locked.

The up position is indeed off. You know this because the red dot
is exposed.

When the safety is on, the down postion, the trigger can be
pulled full back with no effect. The hammer can be pulled back,
but will not stay back, thus there is no cocked andlocked with
the FS. To fire you flick the safety up with your thumb and get
the first shot off either double action or by cocking.

After firing, putting the safety on also decocks the gun.

In the safety on position, a piece between the firing pin and the
hammer is physically rotated out of position so that NOTHING can
set the gun off.

Contrast this with the Glock, which is an accident waiting to
happen. Gee, that's why they say to pull the gun out of the
holster without having my finger inside the trigger guard. Gee, I
didn't realize that part of the holster could catch on the
trigger, etc.

Glocks are drop safe, and the only way for a ND/AD is to pull the trigger
