Does anyone know if the sear block in a Colt AR-15 sporter can be
removed without damage to the weapon. The weapon I am referring to is a
Colt AR-15A3. It is in a match target configuration. Also, the pivot pin
seems to be standard size!? Is this correct?

Thanks in advance,
T.L.

Since I also have the same question, would any kind souls
willing to respond to Mr. Lee also copy me. It looks like there
is a LARGE (say approx. 3/8th) pin running thru the receiver on
either side of the sear block. I've got an Armalite 2 stage trigger
that I'd like to use in this beast but the sear block is making
life difficult.

Thanks in advance ... Squared.

I have no idea.

How so? The "sear block" isn't mandated by law; it was added by Colt in
one of their attempts to appease the anti-gun lobby.

Removing the block leaves you with the same lower receiver configuration
that numerous other AR-15-pattern makers are producing; and one that is
still not capable of accepting an M16 automatic-fire sear without
machining of the lower receiver. Not to mention is still lacking the
other select-fire parts that would be necessary to convert a legal
semi-automatic AR-15 into an illegal unregistered automatic rifle.

Colt finally starting using the standard sized pivot pin, so you can use
any of the various models of upper receiver.

What size are your trigger and sear pins however? You may be stuck using
the Colt-only large size. Does anyone make an adapter to allow the use of
standard sized triggers and sears with these large pins, or is it
necessary to have the triggers and sears modified?

I do not believe that removing the sear block on a colt AR-15 type rifle
would be illegal in itself. It would depend on the reason for the
removal. If the sear block is removed, the receiver has the same
dimensions as a standard AR-15 which is legal. BUT, if you removed the
sear block in order to install an illegal full auto sear or ANY M-16 parts
you would be in big trouble as this would constitute manufacturing a
machinegun illegally. If you removed the sear block in order to install a
set trigger or any other legal part which will not fit with the sear block
in place, I think you would be O.K. Colt put that sear block in place of
their own accord, their is no law requiring it to be there and no other
manufacturer that I know of puts one in. It can be removed by milling the
block out with a milling machine, but make sure that you do not remove any
of the original receiver and that standard AR-15 receiver dimensions
remain. Be prepared to explain whatever you do. If anyone has
information to the contrary, please reply.
