I'm looking for a pump deer rifle and I will be buying used. I see
Remington has the old model 760 and the new model 7600. Is one better
than the other?

Lee, the 760 and 762 are long discontinued. Other than buying used the
7600 is your only choice. Good hunting! Michael

Sorry. Read first, then type. The 760 and 762 were nice rifles, as a
rule more accurate and more reliable than the 740/742/7400 selfloader.
If you encounter a 760 in 244 Remington have a caution as it may not
have a fast enough twist to stabilize factory 100 grain 6mm Remington
ammunition available today. IIRC the 7600 differs in the nature of its
lockup but is otherwise functionally identical. I wonder if recent
ones have the polymer trigger group and the J-lock like the 870. Godd
luck shopping. Michael

No opinion on which is best, just a question on what made you settle on a
pump versus a lever action, auto, or bolt.
Just curious. I've never owned a pump. Thanks.

My brother-in-law has the 7600 in .308. His is at least 30 years old
but is very accurate at 100 yards. The model 7600 is considered a
carbine.

Lee, I can't testify as I've owned maybe 7 of the 760s and no 7600, all
in .30-06. The only reason I sold about 3 of them is that people nagged
me for them and I went out and got another. All used, I've never had a
new one. I like pump actions and love the 760, aa have my kids and
grandkids. You can find good 760s at gun shows, shops, etc.

You might also try to find a Browning BPR. Few Made, but it's a option.

I've got and really like a Remington 7600 Police in .308. The short
barrel and larger aperture make it really quick, and the new recoil pad
takes all the sting out of what might otherwise be an uncomfortable
experience.

I like the pump for quickness. The aperture is quick and, for me,
quicker than open sights. The new recoil pad is a real plus. The
short barrel is also quick and handy.

I'd recommend a short barrel, wide aperture and a really effective
recoil pad on whatever you get. It was cheaper in the long run to just
get what I wanted in the 7600 Police, but if you do your own work, you
can probably duplicate it for less than $350.

Lee,

Check out the username (I've had it since anyone knew what "Internet"
was...)

My Ot Six 7600 I purchased at 10 years old... KICKS like a mule (as does
the 760). I love it... It has never failed me and is more accurate than
most equivalent priced hunting guns on the market (with my handloads).

Here's my take... find a used 7600 in .308 or '06... If you HAPPEN across
a .35 Whelen, don't buy it... Just let me know where it is! ;-)

For a new unit you're likely looking between $420 and $480. For used I'd
expect to come in somewhere between $250(scopeless) to $385 with some name
brand glass)

Good luck in your search. Look up a .35 Whelen and be the envy of your
buddies!

You might find a 760 in .35 Remington, have it rechambered for .35
Whelen. The rifling twist is the same for both. You may want to add a
recoil pad or at least check all your crowns and fillings.

Man you're an optimist!! I gave up actively trying to find one maybe 10
years ago.
I still look at shows, but it's anything but a Whelen.

I was reading the thread about remington 7600s and saw this post.
Happened to have auctionarms.com open in another window at the same
time so I did a search.....

http://www.auctionarms.com/search/displayitem.cfm?itemnum=7150146

There you go. Still 13 days left on the auction. I am not affiliated
with the seller and I have little interest in pump rifles, but I look
forward to seeing how far you guys run the price up on this one!!

Cheers,
Al
