Hi All,
Just aquired a breaktop singleshot pistol in .44 Magnum made by
Sterling Arms Corporation, the model is a X-Caliber (I think). Is the
company still in business ?
What info can you all provide me on this firearm ?
Thanks,
Chris

Sterling Arms made lower cost, small bore (380 ACP was the biggest I
knew of) semiautos in the 70's and 80's. They have been out of business
for many years now. I haven't heard of your gun (and I can't find my
Blue Book to look it up). If it was like their other guns, it would be a
lower cost, but decent quality firearm. Sounds like Sterling Arms was
trying to cash in on the large popularity of the Thompson Contender. As
I can't ever remember seeing one at the many gun show I have gone to for
the past 2 decades, it's probably safe to say not too many were made.

Chris;
Sterling Arms (the one I know of) was located in Gasport, NY and went
out of business in 1983.
Theyh made a variety of inexpensive - but quality - pistols. I'm
unaware of them making a single shot gun.

Neil,
Thanks, this Sterling Arms Corporation has an address in Lockport NY
(probably the same company). This is a well made and nicely blued piece
that judging from the breech face has never been fired. Thanks.
Chris
I have a catalog from 1982 that shows your pistol. It was available in 4
calibers, .22, .22 mag, .357, and .44 mag. the company was in Lockport N.Y.

Damn, I was beginning to think I was the only one that had one! Intro'd in
81-or early 82.
I have a Sept 81 Shooting Times with the X-Caliber as the cover gun.
Supposedly made in
.22, .22 Mag, .357 Mag and .44 Mag. All I have seen or heard of (total of
5) are in .44 mag.
I have contacted the people that acquired all of Sterlings records, but they
could not tell me
total production. Tooling sold to Ithaca, a few made in a round barrel
version.(pg 580 in Blue Book
17) . At one time there was rumor of a company in Arizona planning to make
it, but I could never
verify. All Sterling's I have seen are in the 1600ish SN range. Neat gun,
Mine has a Burris LER
1.5x4 scope, will shoot <1.5" at 100 yds from sandbags with factory
Remington 240 gr SP.
Hope this helps, Bill
