I recently saw a movie about Navy Seals and the team leader was carrying what
appeared to be a Mini 14, with what looked like a Butler Creek folding strock.
Did the Seals ever use these guns?

Sir, you obviously hae been watching that Navy Seals show on TNT or TLC
or some chanel like that. That is a disgrace to anyone in NAVSPECWAR and
the show should be canned. It's like watching one of those B rated Navy
Seal movies from BlockBuster. If you look close you will see them
carrying an SKS with a folding stock. Come on...give me a break. Maybe
they do have some Mini-14's...and they probably have on of every gun
ever made but given their choices, I do not see why they would carry a
Mini-14.

I can assure you that the mini-14 is not a team weapon. The M14 on the other
hand is still used by SEAL teams as well as other SF units. Why would the
Navy, or any other branch of the military use a civilian weapon when they
have a complete arsenal of equally effective or better weapons?
I'm sure someone is bound to say I'm wrong please call Little Creek,VA. or
Coronado, CA. first. Or just ask any hairy frogman.

They producer probably thought that rifle looked cool and decide to use it.
Just like they did on the A-Team.
And for any wondering no I am not claiming to be a SEAL. I have just known a
few in my day.

Are you talking about "Tales of the SeALs" on TLC?
If so, I saw the Mini-14 too. I also saw what appeared to be a
tricked out SKS (in a fancy synth stock).

I think that's more an issue with the shows producers than factual
representation.
I'd imagine SeALs can get about anything they want, but I've never
heard of Mini-14's in the US military's inventory. M14's sure, but not the
Mini-14.

Having an aquaintance who was in the SEALs, I can tell you that he
regularly trained with H&K subguns, M16A4's and 9mm and .45 cal
handguns.
He also used some classified stuff that he was not at liberty to
discuss, and was, of course, expected to be familiar with a variety of
foreign military weps.
He never mentioned using a Mini-14/AC556, and I did like to quiz him
about what sort of neat/unusual stuff he got to play with.

FWIW, I have an AC556 and would never trust my life to it in real
combat.
Fun toy, but rather on the finicky side as to feed and function ( and I
use Ruger factory mags...)

Maybe it was that "A-Team Joins Navy Seals" movie that came out on the "All
Cheesy Network" a while back?

Yep, they were used by some of the former operatives.
They are called AC-556s. They are select fire. They have 10-12 in.
barrels. Neat little stainless pieces. For the current teams though, they
are pretty dated technology. Same thing about the Stoners. Most of the
guys I know use MP-5s for small weapons, and the M-14/ M4-A3s as the usual
ordinance. It just depends on the job they are going to do.
I haven't watched any of the SEAL tv shows, as I just don't watch much
tv. I can only imagine what is on, though. Think I'll just pass.

Don't know about the SEAL teams, or mini 14's, but years ago when I was in a SF
unit we had access to damn near any weapon you can imagine and would sometimes
fire them just because we could.

I don't know anything about the SEALS, but I served 14+ years in Army Special
Forces. I remember going through SOT at the Mott Lake Compound on Ft. Bragg
in 1985 (or it may have been SFARTIC in 1987) and we familiarized with full
auto mini-14s of which there were a few in the inventory. Can't say I was
very much impressed. Would take a CAR-15 anyday.

Is it possible that, on covert missions, such Spec. Forces as the
seals may, occasionally, carry "throw away" civilian or Com-block
guns for special purposes? As in, used for the mission and tossed
away or left behind?

Just a thought.

If you were all that concerned for such respect, you wouldn't be parading
around here as "Specops," now would you? <g>

Close... I believe it was the Somalia Embassy episode on The Discovery
Channel, and narrated by Scott Glenn.

It was a low budget dramatization and very little attention was paid to
verisimilitude of any sort.
