I have the 336W Marlin model that has holes drilled and tapped on the
top of the receiver for a scope mount and the front site mounted on a
ramp.
I'm looking to replace the factory buckhorn rear site with a peep site
that would mount on the top of the receiver without having to replace
or modify the factory front bead site.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank You.

Check out the Willaims line. I used one on a Marlin 1895 without
changing the front sight. I think it was the FP-94/36. It mounted to
the side of the receiver using factory Marlin mounting holes.

I also put one on my Winchester 94, again using factory mounting holes
and not having to change the front sight.

The front sight will work just fine, provided you like bead sights. I
replaced mine with a "patridge" style square blade, but the height of the
factory front sight is OK. I recommend the Williams Foolproof peep sight,
the one with hunting knobs, not target knobs. Let me know if you have
trouble finding it. - CW

I don't have a 336, but I have the 44 magnum version and I used to own
the 45/70 version. In both cases I could use the existing front sight
with the Williams receiver sight I installed.

Just order one from Williams.
Should work fine with the factory front sight.
I used one on a Win 94, boresighted and was on the paper first shot.

I put a XS ghost ring rear sight and front sight on my Marlin 336.
Excellent! Getting ready to add one to my 1894C as well.

Check it out at http://www.xssights.com/store/rifle.html.

Lyman's mounts on the side, they used to pre-drill and tap for it at
the factory. Mine needed no front sight change to adjust for height,
although I did. Factory brass bead was a little fragile and broke
off, I replaced it with a green fiber optic number.

A Williams FP would be my vote. A Williams 5D is a few bucks
less. In either case there are no holes to drill if you get the
one made for the M336. I would also recommend that you get
a slot blank to fill the hole where the rear sight is. The rear sight is
removed
from left to right and the blank goes in right to left. There is a right
and left side to the blank. This is so it can start it into the slot and
will
get tight as you move it to the center.
Also, Williams has a package deal where you get the rear peep sight
and a fiber front sight.

You will like the peep sight far more than you know. It is the best
thing you can put on the rifle.

The Marlin 30-30 did not need a new front sight when I installed the
Williams foolproof rear sight. When I tried to install the XS package
(comes with front and rear, see here:

http://www.midwayuk.com/apps/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?SaleItemID=920514

on an 1894C I ran into problems since that one DID require a different
front sight. Midway said it did not, but once I installed the rear
sight I found that it did. Midway refused to take it back, since it
had been installed, and they insisted it did not need a different
front. I called XS and they verified that it did ( I needed a slightly
taller front sight, forget the exact dimension). XS said that they
would swap me, even though I bought it (for less) at Midway. I just
un-installed the XS and returned it to Midway (it looked fine, I
wouldn't have passed on buying it as "new"). I then bought a Williams
for that gun also (actually, I think I moved the "foolproof" to that
and bought a Williams that you slide to adjust (WGRS, I think this
one:

http://www.midwayitalia.com/apps/eproductpage.exe/ShowProduct?saleitemid=681364

on the 30-30. I figured I don't adjust the 30-30 as often, but play
w/ different loads in the .357 and would want to fiddle w/ it more. I
did have to shim the foolproof so that it mounted farther to the left
in order to fully lower it on the 1894. I didn't buy the second later
ones from midway, of course.

# Check it out athttp://www.xssights.com/store/rifle.html.

They do seem to know their product better than Midway does, but others
do sell the XS for cheaper. I'll go direct to XS next time.

I was reading the post's replies, and not everyone read that you were using
the scope holes on top. All I can say is when I had a side mounted, not the
top mounted Williams site, I had to get a new front bead a little taller.
But this rifle always shot a little high it's whole life even with the
factory semibuck horn all the way down!

I read that newer marlins were leaving off the little holes in the side for
side mount peep sights and just doing the 4 on top. Is that what you have?
Then you get the Williams WGRS Receiver sight WGRS-336!!

Good luck! I'd stick it on there and try it. I couldn't see anything in low
light so I just scoped my 336cs and 444s. Some people say take the little
aperture and throw it away...but it works good on sunny days at the range!

You can download the entire Williams catalog at http://www.williamsgunsight.com
but note that it is 50Mb

They make different peepsights that mount either on the side or on the
top of the receiver. I think you will find that the model that mounts
on the top will sit so high that you will need to have a taller front
sight. On the other hand, if your rifle is fairly new, it may not be
drilled & tapped for a side mounted peep sight.

Changing the front sight is easy - drive out the old sight from left
to right. Remove the 2 screws, and the ramp comes off. You can then
install a taller ramp and/or a taller front sight blade.

BTW, a "patridge" blade front sight is *way* better than a round bead,
when used with a peep sight.
