I am looking at a Parker Hale 30 06. The rifle is in very good shape and the
price is right.

I know nothing about Parker Hale!! I have never shot one, nor do I know
anyone who shoots one.

Does anyone here have any experience with them?? Any advice??

I had a friend who had one back when I was in the Australian Navy. It rolled
a lot of deer in Tasmania.

The Australian and New Zealand armies use them as their standard sniper
rifle. Can't remember which model off hand.

prices seem to stagnate, they dont appreciate much...nice looking gun, but
folks dont seem to care for em here...maybe because Ohio isnt a rifle state,
deer-hunting-wise...I collect winchester model 70's and folks will nearly jump
over a table to see a supergrade, but the CD's get little interest...jmtcw

If it is a Parker Hale made in the last 30 years it is probably made on
a Czech built Mauser action and barrel. I would look at the proof
marks on the receiver and barrel. I'll bet you will find both English
and Czech proofs.

Parker Hale is an old and well respected name for high-quality rifles. Be
wary, though, of newly manufactured stuff that simply licenses the name, or
has bought the trademark. For example, Charles Daly once meant a lot more
than it apparently does now.

Check to see where the rifle was made, and when. You're doing the right
thing by doing some research first, but folks here will probably need to
know more than just the brand name and the caliber to give you useful
information.

The Parker Hale rifles made in England are excellent rifles based on the
Mauser action. Since 1992, they were made in the US, but I have not seen
any for a quality comparison. Many of these rifles have set triggers. Many
of these rifles were sold to GI's stationed in Europe.

Dave,
I have a Parker-Hale .30-06. Great shooting rifle, really like it. Glass
bedded. Took my first deer with it at about 200 yards across a cornfield.
I inherited it, so don't know much about pricing, although I've heard figures
in the $300-$400 range.
Only problem with mine is that the recoil pad has deteriorated. A dealer
with whom I spoke told me that this is not an uncommon problem with Parker-Hale
rifles.
Best wishes,
Jay

Is it a '98 Mauser action? They were okay rifles.

The Parker Hales were very common throughout the British Commonwealth and
sold very well here in Canada. The model 1200 came in various grades and
stock configurations. The 1000 and 1100 were a bit more utilitarian but
basically the same rifle. They were built on the Mauser action and will
accept scope mount for that gun as well as the Husqvarna. Sometimes you can
find them identified as the model 1000, 100C, 1100, 1200, 1700, 2600, and
the Midland. The 2600 and the Midland had a different receiver and takes
different scope mounts. On the 1000 through 1200 you can use Weaver mounts
45 for the rear and 46 for the front. Leupold's mount is the No. 643726.

You have a gun that is selling used in Canada for around $400-$500 Cdn
dollars in decent shape and I haven seen one that wasn't.

I had my barrel cut off just behind the front sight ramp and that left
approximately a 22 inch barrel. I had it crowned and the amputation seemed
to stiffen it out. With glass bedding it was a tack driver as well as being
a lot more handy in the jack pine forest. They are definately great rifle,
mine took literally tons of moose, mulies and whitetails in fact for a lot
of years it was my only rifle so it got to shoot things a 30-06 normally
wouldn't be tested against. You can't compare a Parker Hale to anything
made in the USA they are just a superior rifle and could be had in virtually
every calibre for shooting field rats to elephants.

Mine liked Hornady 165 gr spire point flat base bullets best of all, why I
don't know.

Hope you get lots of use out of it and good shooting.

They are very good guns. They still have a website that shows their
guns and it gives the impression that they are still being made. I
tried contacting them a few months back to find a source to purchase
from and I received an email response a week later stating that they
haven't been in the gun business for a few years. I just thought it
was strange that they go to the trouble of maintaining a website for
guns that they don't make anymore.

Recoil pads are like tires. Don't expect them to last a lifetime.

AFAIK they only make sniper rifles now, and I don't imagine they sell
thousands or even hundreds of those a year.

Per their web site:

http://www.parker-hale.com/

they offer a modern built M1903 clone in 30'06, a M-16 look alike
semi-automatic rifle in .22LR, and a scoped bolt action target rifle
called the Stalker in .243 and .308. They also have air guns and scopes.

The web site seems to definitely imply that their products are currently for
sale.

Perhaps you missed this on the front page:

"Due to this, all gun production has been halted, however cleaning kits
and accessories will continue to be manufactured under the control of
John Rothery Wholesale."

Just had pointed out to me that the web site has a news item:

"On 16th November 2000, all rights to the name and intellectual
property of Parker Hale Ltd were purchased by John Rothery
Wholesale Ltd. Due to this, all gun production has been halted,

however cleaning kits and accessories will continue to be manufactured
under the control of John Rothery Wholesale."

So it seems they are out of the gun business. Odd they haven't
bothered to remove all the product and sales' information from
the other web pages.
