Ned an effective moderatly priced pistol, I have been retired from
Camden NJ Police for 14 years but always carried my old off duty gun, a
3 inch Chiefs Special.

Find a range that you can rent both and run a couple of clips in
each. The finger groves in the Glock grip make it hard for me to get
a good consistent grip, if it fits your hand it would be a good
choice.
I choose the Springfield XD, it fit my hand better and the grip
safety is a really nice feature on any simi auto handgun especially
one that has no manual safety. The Serpa Retention holster is easy
to draw from and adds the safety of making it harder for others to
pull your weapon at the same time as it promotes a draw with the
triger finger along the side of the frame.

I like both companies, but if I were to have one gun for SD, it's a Glock 19

You will find that the Glock has a multitude of aftermarket parts,
sights and holsters available. New factory Mags for less than $20.

If you can find a used G19, get it. Almost any glock part other than
the slide can be picked up for < $30. So you can rebuild them dirt
cheap. The worst thing about Glocks are the factory sights. Budget for
replacements.

I have never shot the SR9 but I know that they had a recall.

In what way has your M36 let you down? Since you're accustomed to a J-
frame if you need something lighter or more compact try a S&W 442.

There is nothing wrong with my Chief's Special but after 38 years I
just thought I would get a bigger hi capacity gun for use in the winter.
I've never shot under a 98 on the qualification corse with it, even
back when we still shot out to 50 yards. that is why I got the 3 inch
one with 1/8th inch sights, it shoots as good as a 4 inch M&P.
I went to shoot the NJ retired police course in November and shot a
100%, not a pretty 100 cause there was a little scattering of the shots
but they were all in the kill zone but now you only shoot out to 25
yards. I'm just an old man playing around with new guns.

Not to be a smart ass, but what's wrong with the S&W mod 36?
I have a number of friends that choose them for CCW.

I was faced with the same dilemma recently. Was very interested in
the high capicity of the SR9. Already owned Ruger P90, P97, SP101,
Redhawk 44 mag, Mini 14 and 10/22. Love them all. However, the
trigger recall, mag safety and horrible trigger pull just turned me
off. Absolutely the heaviest trigger pull I have ever felt. Ended up
buying a G19 used for $425.00. (Already owned a G27 and G30SF) Like
new. Manufacture date of 02/09. Still had the copper grease on the
rails. It has become my new favorite. Carry it IWB at 4 o'clock with
no problem. Backup G17 mag with sleeve. Have even pocket carried a
few times in a Desantis nemisis holster. Slightly large for pocket
carry. Bottom of the grip shows at the top rear of the pocket. With
the high price and limited availability of ammo, have only put 100
rounds through her, but it went bang every time. No FTF, jams,
stovepipes, etc. Buy the G19. You will not be sorry.

I have both but prefer Glocks for their simplicity and cheap parts.

The Ruger looks like a Glock inside. It has an external manual safety
(for those who can't keep their finger off the trigger) and a much
heavier trigger pull.

Shoot both and pick your favorite.

I'd have to go with the guys that say to try both before you buy. The
Glock grip doesn't necessarily fit everyone, the trigger seems to
drive some folks nuts and there's some out there that seem to need a
lever to flip to feel safe with a gun. In stock form, they're
accurate enough for self-defense, most won't out-shoot a dedicated
match gun, though. The Ruger probably wouldn't either, haven't seen
one yet. The Glock trigger pull can be easily slicked up, if needed,
it's not going to be the glass-break of a S&W single-action or prepped
1911, but it'll do. It's hard to beat for user maintenance, a
detailed strip needs nothing more than the right pin punch.

And there's nothing wrong with a Chiefs Special with the right ammo,
either. Carry a couple of speed strips and practice reloading. The
right grips make a big difference with those small frames. The old J-
frame "banana" stocks seem to have been made for people with really
small hands. Lots more options for grips around these days.
