I have the chance to buy a TCA barrel that is supposed to fit the contender.
What is a TCA barrel? Do they actually fit the contener? Thanks.

That would be a barrel manufactured by Thompson/Center for the Thompson
Center Collectors Association. These are factory barrels. Usually they
are in a non cataloged caliber or configuration.

TCA = Thompson Center Association. $35 a year and you get the magazine "One
Good Shot". A fine group of fellows that collect TC stuff. Every so often the
TCA orders from TC a barrel of a certain type that will only be sold to members
of the TCA. Many have been for Contenders (as opposed to Encores). If you have
a Contender, you should be able to tell the difference by looking at it. If it
doesn't look like a Contender barrel in the lug area it isn't.

TCA is the Thompson Contender Association - these are a special run of barrels
sold by the Association, they may have slightly more value than regular
barrels, and they should fit any Contender except an Armor Alloy Contender.
Note I assume you really mean TCA and not TCR - the TCR was a special rifle
that used barrels totally different from the Contender..Joel in Florida

Even all Contender barrels do not fit all Contender frames.

I am not expert, but I had a friend who experienced problems with early
barrels and recent production frames. Sorry, I cannot give you details, the
friend passed away.

I would be hesitant unless the price is VERY low (making the barrel
resellable if it doesn't work for you) or you can test fit the barrel to
your frame. The best option would obviously be to test fit before buying.

A TCA barrel is a barrel made by Thompson/Center for the
Thompson/Center Association special buys for members. They
are chamberings and barrel lengths not available as standard
T/C offerings to the general public. These include things
like octagonal barrels, .17REM, 6" barrels, etc. The price
is generally a lot lower than going to a custom shop.

Unless it is a TCA offering for an Encore, it certainly
will fit your Contender

RB, As Mr. Henley said, they are non-catalogued factory barrels offered for
some interesting cartridges or with alternative barrel lengths and
configurations. They are otherwise not overly special so be careful not to
pay too much. Check out http://www.edstc.com/edstc/tca.html for a selection
of TCA barrels and fair prices. If you are looking for a combination not
offered by the factory be sure to check out the Fox Ridge Custom Shop
http://www.foxridgeoutfitters.com/customshop/index.html Good hunting!

I've run into a few problems but been able to fix them with a little judicious
adjustment by way of Dremel tool.

What he needed was the new split locking bolt lugs. Formerly this was one
piece. Free from TC Arms.
