My friend just graduated from the border patrol academy. He thought he
was carrying hydrashocks, but after looking at the bullet, I didn't see
a penetrator in the holopoint.

Second, he said it would penetrate body armor. I didn't think any
holowpoints would penetrate body armor.

Can someone clarify this for me?

Thank you!

Your friend need to go back to class and listen more
closely. The peg in a hydroshock is not a penetrator. Is
helps the round to mushroom. No it won't go through
body armor.

Vests have ratings. But for general rule of thumb handgun bullets can not
penetrate a vest. Much of the information given out in such training facilities
is very bogus and should be suspect.
Hollowpoints are the least likely to penetrate a vest. one handgun round can
penetrate the level 2 vests and that is the .30 Mauser, in FMJ, but that is not
a common round on the steet.

If he was using Federal ammunition, he may have been carrying Federal's
BPLE, or the Hi-Shok. Neither of these use the lead post.

They don't.

Hydra-Shocks won't penetrate soft body armor..neither will any other
hollow point or conventional FMJ handgun bullet. The little protrusion
in the cavity of a hydra-shock is made out of soft lead and is not used
to improve penetration. It is there to force fluids to the inside walls
of the hollowpoint cavity and aid in expansion. It also help keep the
bullet from pluging up when fired into heavy clothing.

They won't penetrate any better than any of the rest of the premium hollow
points. Whether it will or not depend on the level of protection of the
armor and the type of projectile. If I remember right the lowest level of
protection covers up to a 9mm so anything more powerful would be more likely
to go through. Then again an arrow with broadhead from a kids bow will poke
right through without a plate.

The post in the center of the HydraShock cavity is not a penetrator. It is
there simply to divert hydrostatic pressure outwards to enhance expansion.

Tell your friend to go back to the academy for Remedial Ballistics.
Hollow point handgun ammo will not penetrate soft body armor.

You are right. Hollow points and the hydrashock can not penetrate the body
armor. Steel core and the spire point fmj can. The little .22 lr round
nose can penetrate some of the older weave styles, but they are almost
nonexistent now because of this.

I am almost POSITIVE commercial handgun bullets CANNOT have penetrators in
them. Federal law prohibits them. Hydroshock bullets would have no advantage
over penetrating a vest. In fact the faster a bullet mushrooms, the less
likely it will penetrate.

If the armor is rated level 2 or above, it should stop the bullet. Our
undersheriff took a 15 year old panel from a vest, and fired 15 rounds of
Hydroshock 9 mm into it, and got no penetration from 10 yds. The odd part
was with ball ammo, it took three multiple hits in a 2" area to penetrate
from the same distance.

I'm not sure what you've been reading, but it would appear NOT to be
authoritative. Black Talons are hollowpoints no longer produced, but
they will NOT penetrate a Level IIA Second Chance Vest. I suspect the
same is true of other IIA vests from other makers.

In our agency trials with level 2 and 2A vest panels and 9mm, 45 ACP and
40 S&W we did not get penetration from Talons ( or their re-incarnation
the Ranger) at 21' The little cutting points got all fouled in the
strands of Kevlar. Closest to penetration still had about 2 layers
before full penetration.

This is not the first rasp-a**, turpentine cat tale I've heard spun
about Hydrashoks. Honest to God, a Sheriff's Deputy in Maryland was
once telling me about the "steel wires" (no exaggeration, his words)
in the Federal Hydrashok spinning out and shredding the body. Thought
I was gonna need sutures for my lip as I bit down.

Hi.
When you put out a statement like that, you should define the type of Body

The only place Black Talons will penetrate body armor are in the fervid
imaginations of the ignorant gun banners who start these myths, which
unfortunately trickle down to even the gun-owning populace.

Black Talons will NOT penetrate body armor (unless they are of a caliber the
body armor in question isn't rated to stop, and even then, hollow point ammo
is more likely to be stopped by body armor than FMJ rounds), they are a
conventional hollow point design.

Wrong. Black Talon ammo was hyped but the anti-gun press but facts are,
it's no different than today's Winchester SXT other than color. And,
according to FBI reports, no handgun bullet has ever penetrated a level
II protective vest. Those officers who died while wearing a vest were
either shot in the head (thanks to Schumer and Feinstein) or hit in a
part of the body not protected by the vest.

FWIW, the ammo that started the whole' cop-killer-bullet" craze was the
LEO-only KTW round. Designed for the police and sold solely to the
police....

I have often wondered why Hydra-shocks haven't gone the way of the Talon
and Rhino. They look pretty scary to me. Federal was smart not to give
them an inherently evil black moly/teflon coating! Biggest difference
between H-S's and the evil copkillers is that the Federals are actually
effective bullets. Guess the government is only scared of fairy-tails
and nonexistant bullets.

That's not exactly true. You need to specify the condition under
which that statement can be true, something like, "at normal pistol
velocities."

Given the technology, I can make a drinking straw penetrate Class II
body armor at 9000 fps - a B.T. or HydraShock would be no problem -
heck, they wouldn't even have to be spinning on axis (probably would
disintegrate if they were).

Discovery Channel had a pretty neat show about "space armor". They
showed a 1/2 inch aluminum plate which had been penetrated by a 1 mm
grain of sand. It looked like a 50BMG that went through a soda can.
The test speed was 7000fps. It vaporized a considerable amount of the
aluminum plate.

Any object at rest is relatively easy to penetrate with any smaller
object given enough velocity.

I don't know what you have been smoking, but the last time we
qualified, we shot 3 Black Talons point blank into a vest, within 2
inches of each other. They did not penetrate more than one or 2 layers
of the vest.

Even FMJ would not penetrate it.

You understand that I was calling the Hydra-shock's effective, right.
Notice i didnt say H-S are the best bullet out there...but they are
quite a bit better at doing what they say they will that the
magical/cop-killer type rounds. All i was saying is that H-S are
atleast as good as most other premium conventional hollowpoints...which
makes them better than mystical teflon coated, mercury filled, death ray
bullets. BTW my data on Hydra-shocks comes from the FBI testing which
can be found at the International Wound Balistics site.
Jason,
P.S. Plus-p....still your old self...lol. Going WAY off the subject to
start an argument. My post was about why the media demonizes and bans
non-existant bullets but ignores real, effective and equaly scary
rounds. I wounder the same thing about Glazers and Mag-Safes...however
their effectivness is personaly in doubt. But they are infinatly better
than rounds that dont even exist. Could you imagine how the media would
interprate Glazers!!! Just think of how many times you have heard
"hollowpoint blow up when they hit something", and imagine what the
gun-ignorant public would have to say about safety-slugs.
