Review of Taurus PT-945 .45 ACP Semi-Auto

Acquired a Taurus PT-945 .45 ACP Semi-Auto last week for
target shooting and Concealed Carry. This ran $ 360 at
Bass Pro Warehouse of north Atlanta for the blued model.
At this excellent price for .45 ACP, I feel the gun is a very good
value for the money.

The four inch barrel, 30 oz. weight and single-stack 8 round magazine
make the gun thin and reasonable for concealment.

Disassembly of the gun reveals slight machining marks on a couple of
inside component surfaces but this is only cosmetic. The exterior
finish is good. The function and fit of pieces seem smooth.

The ambidexterous safety/de-cocker works well. The disassembly lever
can also be swapped to the other side for a left-handed shooter.

Performance: Have only fired a few hundred rounds so far.
February 1996 issue of Shooting Times ( http://www.shooters.com/st62.html)
claims this handgun capable of 2.68 to 4 inch shot grouping, though I have not
verified this.

Both factory target ammo and commercially made reloads feed well with no jams.
I like the balance of the gun and the large flat handle fits my hand well.
This gun doesn't smack my hand like my old Rossi .357 did with .357 ammo.
Maybe the ergonomics and fit are better?

The trigger has a long pull for the first round(DA) and is fairly smooth
for 8 pounds, but not great. The hammer-cocked trigger pull is very good
at only 5.6 pounds.

Cons: I don't like the feel of the grips which are some kind of plastic:
these will be replaced. Any suggestions on grips out there?

The standard sights are good, square and square-notched with a bright white
dot on each which I find helpful. The sights are dove-tailed to the slide and
could be easily replaced.

Possibly with Tritium/glow night sights.
Do night sights really work? Do any of you have real-life experience with
tritium night sights? Are they worth having for working in the dark
with a flashlight?

None of 4 local gunshops(Atlanta), including Bass Pro-shop has any
extra magazines for the Taurus PT-945. This is odd considering that
two shops claim this gun is "flying off the shelves". But
several shops offered to special-order the Taurus factory 8-round mags
at $ 25.00 to $ 29.00. I'll take four, please, for IDPA practice sessions.
Are ten round mags available?

Over all I like it much better than my .357. Thanks for previous
posts in this newsgroup that convinced me to try this gun.
