Anyone here own a Taurus 415 revolver in .41 Mag?
I'd like to enter the world of revolvers, and from what I've expereienced,
the .41 is a blast. I read a favorable review in a gun rag, but I wanted
to hear some more opinions on fit and finish, how you like the caliber,
recoil controllability, etc.

Thanks for your time,

Viva.

I don't know about that specific model of pistol but the Taurus's I've had
have been great guns. As far as the .41 mag. I think it's the best revolver
round I've ever seen. It's inherently accurate, packs a wallop but doesn't
have near the recoil a .44 mag does. I have been watching out for a good
deal on a .41 mag myself. The next revolver I add to my collection will be a
.41 mag unless I just run across a deal on another caliber that I can't turn
down. I don't know if it's just me or what but they seem easier to control
than a .357 but do about the same damage as a 44 mag does without the
recoil, I really like them and gave my Father in law the last one I had
because he fell in love with it. It was a sweet shooting piece.
Good luck,
SPECOPS.

I have the 425 Tracker in 41 mag. which appears to be different only in
barrel length. I really like mine and the fit and finish are up to par. I
did a little polishing on the trigger to smooth it out. Recoil is not to
bad with reg. loads/bullets. My nieces and nephews like to shoot it and
they are in their early teens. I have some heavy 285gr. loads that are not
so pleasant to shoot. I reload all my rounds since the 41 mag. is not that
popular it would be to expensive to shoot. I would guess that the shorter
barrel on the 415 would give more blast and you may not develop the full
velocity of load if that matters. I did notice on mine that with the
porting you need to keep the barrel extended away from your face. So, don't
try to fire this one from the waist.
Hope this helps.

I can not talk to the Taurus but I do have a Ruger Redhawk in .41 Mag
and I love it. Before I bought it in about 1985ish, I did some reading
on the subject of .41 vs .44. What sold me on the .41 was that it only
had 8% less energy with 24% less recoil. A writer did a pine board
penetration test using three calibers. A .357, .41, and .44 magnums.
The results were that the .357 went through 6 boards, the .44 went
through 11 boards and the .41 went through 12. Today they use gelatin
for that purpose. I can twak 1 gallon water jugs at 100 yards
consistently with it. In 1985 the .41 was loaded a bit hotter than it
is loaded to now. But I solved that by rolling my own. An old Hornaday
reloading manual lists a 210gn JHP .41mag load at 1600 fps from a 8 3/4
inch test barrel. Todays factory ammo tends to be more like 1250 fps.
If you load your own, John Taffin has an interesting read about a
proposed .41 special that moves the .41 from a hunting round to a
defense round / practice round. The only factory loads I use in my .41
are ones I buy at the indoor shooting range as they don't like my JHPs
or JSP that I prefer to shoot. Those factory loads just don't measure
up though.

Try the Federal Premium, if you can find them, they are the stoutest
factory loads I have used in my Mod 57 (for you smith haters out there,
that is a 57 not 657 and they quit make them along time before the sell
out). Good performance and accuracy.

I carried the 57 as a duty gun until we got a magnophobic cheif. Even
though the 210 LSWC were only about 900 fps they still said magnum on
the head stamp. If only some one had made a 41 spec back in them days.

I recently picked up a 415 in .41 mag and I love it. It is pretty accurate
as I am able to hit cans at roughly 40 yards with little trouble. The recoil
is managable but ammo is tough to find. I am not a huge fan of the fixed sights
since my poi tends to be a little to the right but i think that may be operator
error. Anyhow, I have fed it anything from ballistic silvertips to cheap-o
reloads and never had a light primer strike or failure to fire. Good solid gun
and feels great in my hand.
