At a recent gun show I picked up a couple of 4 oz. plastic bottles of
LSA oil in the olive drab continers ($0.50 each). Now that I have it,
was wondering what it is and what it should be used on. Looks like it
might be good for slides on pistols, but a little heavy for the
smaller moving parts.

Full spec: LSA WEAPONS OIL MEDIUM MIL-L-46000B-9150-00-889-3522

Is it a decent lube for guns, or should I just set it next to the can
of 3-in-1 out in my garage?

Thanks

Mike (posting from my wife's account)

LSA means "Lubricant, Small Arms" so it's just fine for using on your
handguns. I use it as a finishing coat on exposed parts when storing
my rifles for extended periods. I tend to use higher tech lubricants
for protecting moving parts (like Tetra-Lube).

Barbara,

LSA stands for "Lubricant, Small Arms." It was brought out during the Vietnam
War, ostensibly for lubricating the M16 rifle and other full-auto weapons.
Compared to the high-tech lubricants we have today, such as Snake Oil and
FP-10, LSA really isn't in the same ballpark. It was great for the '60s,
though. When we couldn't get enough of it to lube our M85 .50-caliber machine
guns on our tanks, we used hydraulic fluid, instead. The problem with that is
that the red fluid is flammable and would often catch fire when the gun got
hot. Fortunately, the Army began issuing a green hydraulic fluid, which was
fire retardant. We still never had enough LSA, though. A bottle the size you
bought isn't enough to do one gun. We used the stuff by the quart.

In the USMC, when I was in not too long ago, LSA (Lubricant, Semifluid,
All weapons) was coveted for use on the M-60, 'cause the CLP we were
issued cooked off so darn quickly. LSA is good stuff, I would have high
confidence in it.

Lubricant, Small Arms, to the best of my recollection.

I thought it was "Lubricant, small arms" but I wouldn't swear to it.

The un-informed must include the JPFO (Jews for the Preservation of
Firearms Ownership.) They gave researched the heck out of this common
quote and found no evidence that he ever said it. And they had an obvious
axe to grind in the other direction. And, just for an historical aside,
other 'civilized nations' had, for all practical purposes, complete gun
control and/or registration before 1935.
