The Smith & Wesson Model 27 "Highway Patrolman" is definitely
a .357 Magnum. The S&W Models 57 & 58 are the only Smith & Wessons
made in .41 Magnum to date to my knowledge.

That should read "Model 28 Highway Patrolman".

The Model 28 is a less-well-finished version of the Model 27.

Both are, as noted, .357 Magnum. The Model 27 is, of course, the
direct descendent of the original .357 Magnum.

With a 6" barrel, the M28 is my favorite pistol of all time,
particularly when fitted with the smooth, wide combat trigger.

Model 27s with the 5" barrel and counterbored chambers also get my
attention, but they're just too pretty (and too uncommon) to shoot.

Wasn't there a small (200 or so) run of stainless "657's" a few
years back? I seem to recall being surprised at something *new* in
.41 Mag.

It is a .357 Mag Highway Patrolman. This an N-frame S&W introduced in 1954,
currently out of production. It is a somewhat rougher version of the 27,
with less polish (I seem to remember that they have an unusual grey finish).
Originally made in 4" & 6" barrel lengths. Still plentiful on the used
market (lots of police departments are trading them in for autos).

This would be the perfect gun to build into a 7-round Baumannize conversion.

Oops, I meant the Smith & Wesson *Model 28* "Highway Patrolman".
(Of course, the Model 27 is also a .357).

Speaking of which, I have an extra 6" M28 with both a bum cylinder
and a pitted barrel that I'm interested in selling.

I took it as sweetener in a trade. It has a glass smooth action,
which has never been touched, so far as I can tell.

Would make a great basis for a pin gun, etc.

Make me an offer. All federal firearms laws to be observed.

[I'm thinking of converting it to .44 Special, so I'm not too eager
to sell.]

As you noticed I mis-identified the "Highway Patrolman", I already sent
a correction to this in a separate post (but apparently yours beat mine).

I also like S&W model 28s as values for the money. Strangely enough,
around here I sometimes see used Model 27s selling for less than
Model 28s. Wierd. I saw a 6" Model 27, which looked almost new,
in the wood case go for $250 at the local armory show a few
weeks back. Truly amazing. The 6" Model 27 I owned I paid $225 for
($225 with no box, paper, etc. five years back).

You're right, there was (and I think may still be) a Model 657.
I shouldn't have missed this as I used to own a 6"
Model 657 when they first came out several years back. :-}

S&W just released a new run of 300 Model 657 Classic Hunters. These are
supposed to come pre-drilled with the pattern used on the .44 Mag Classic's.
A fellow in Gun List had an advertisment for them. When I called he told me
that he had picked up 75 of them. If any of you are interested contact:

Walt @ 304-988-2911. He is asking $395 for them.

If everything has gone well I should be able to give you some idea what
they are like in a day or two.
