....or is it one of those FFL-only type purchases? (Or worse, just not
available anywhere.)

I bought, through an online auction, a used P85 (pre-MKII) slide, spring and
guide, and barrel. Cost just under $42, and I figured it would be nice to
have a spare barrel (which I imagine would cost more than $42), plus I get a
nifty new two-tone look (it's blued; my frame is silverish). As an
unexpected bonus, I got a bag with all the other parts, including (3!) grip
panels. So if I want to put together (or, more realistically, have an
experienced gunsmith put together) a whole pistol out of the parts (and
let's just gloss over the legality and reporting requirements for a moment),
I need a frame. www.gunbroker.com didn't show any for auction today, and I
wondered just how seldom a stripped frame would be available--if ever.

Any ideas on where to find one, and whether it would have to go through a
dealer? (I imagine it would--same as the whole AR-15 upper/lower receiver
deal, right?) Considering the potential effort, is it more trouble than it's
worth? Anyone just want to try to talk me out of it?

Thanks,

Curtis

It is an FFL item. I would imagine there may be some out there but the cost
would be way too high more than likely. You can get a nice P-89 for around
$300. I am sure the project your trying here would cost a lot more so why
bother?

You can buy a frame if you find a frame for sale. Ruger won't sell you one.
Most firearms manufacturers won't sell anything but a complete firearm. If
you were to locate a frame it would be used and you would have to locate the
parts to complete it. I would expect any parts in the trigger group would be
have to be installed at the factory. As one of the other posters stated by
the time you locate all of the parts you would have more money invested than
it would cost to buy the whole pistol.

Kinda curious, are you sure that Ruger won't sell a frame? I have many
Ruger firearms and if I broke the frame through normal wear and tear, or
my stupidity, I'm sure I could buy repair parts, including frames. At
least I hope so. I don't expect that Ruger expects worn out or broken
firearms to simply be disposed of for lack of selling the replacement frame?

If you have a Ruger with a damaged frame you will need to send it back to
them.I don't think any of the manufacturers will sell a frame or receiver.
Most won't sell a barreled action. Every company sells non-critical parts.
When you start looking for trigger and barrel/receiver type parts they want
them to be factory fitted. It is probably all intended to prevent accidents
and lawsuits.

This doesn't apply to most of the military type firearms. You can buy
anything but the receiver through the mail. There is also a wide variety of
1911 and AR-15 type receivers available to FFL holders.

Gun Parts Corp does list receivers but most of the time they are using an
illustration from another source that shows all of the parts in a firearm.
Unless they have a price and a part number they probably don't offer the
frame or receiver. You can call and ask they might not have have enough to
list them in their catalog.
You might find a frame from some other source, you don't know who might have
damaged or lost some parts of their pistol. It would be a real needle in a
haystack.

If that's where Ruger puts the serial number, it's highly doubtful
that they will sell a new frame because it would be considered a "new
and different" firearm under federal law.

In their manuals the frame say's "not offered for sale". I am sure if you
had one that was broken they would fix it, but they would expect you to send
them the gun,

They would probably insist you return the gun to them to have the
frame "fitted." I doubt they'll send out a frame, even for FFL
transfer. It would be worth calling them to ask, but Ruger is funny
about sending out parts in the first place.
