Midway is running a special on Simmons Whitetail Classics - offering a
6.5-20x with 50mm adjustable objective for $130. This seems like a lot of
scope for the money, but what kind of quality will I get from this scope?
Anyone with good/bad experiences, I'd appreciate your comments. Thanks

clear and the adjustments track very well, but I think they retail now for
about 350.00 to375.00. I doubt the optics on a 130.00 scope in that power
range would be of good quality....You get what you pay

Dear Stacy: Simmons makes nice scopes, except for the very cheapest
($39 specials). I have a Pro Hunter 6-18X40 that goes for about $110
and I really like it, excellent optical quality. Plus, the company will
replace any scope that fails in service, gratis. I say, buy it if the
specs fit your application. - CW

Kevin,
I have the Simmons ATV(4.5x12 with AO) on my ruger 10/22 and I think it
is a lot of scope for the bucks.
Have been very pleased with it.

Kevin-

I can't say a darn thing about that particular scope but I can say that
a., Midway often has some delicious optics prices, and b., Simmons
makes a good scope as long as you avoid the 3x9x32 special at Wal-Mart
and other ultra-cheap models. I have one of their "44mag" series, a
3x10x44 that goes for about $150 that I am very, very happy with.

I have a $35 Simmons on my $35 10/22. I selected it by going to a place
in a gun show with a huge selection of scopes. I looked at the same dim
spot under a distant table with each scope. The brightness v.s. price
was very non linear. The Simmons was 90 % as bright and clear as a $350
Leupold or $250 B&L, but the Simmons is twice as bright and clear as a
$20 Chineese.

The scope has held it's zero (on a .22 for what that's worth). I can
make a ragged hole at 100 feet despite the Ruger's trigger from Hell.

Have one of these scopes on a savage 22-250. Works great up to 600 yds. After
that the parellex is unclear. I never noticed this until I took it out for
praire dogs. It worked ok but was slightly blurry at distances over 600 yds. I
think it is a great scope for the money.

Hi,

You're right that cheaper scopes (up to a point) have pretty good
optics. The trade rags constantly harp on brightness because they
know that it won't offend their cheap scope advertisers. As you
pay more for scopes, optics become only incrementally brighter
and better. Even sub-$100 scopes have fully multi-coated optics
and many sub-$50 have fully single-coated optics. It takes
lab instruments to tell the difference betwen a $300 scope and
a $1300 scope.

The most obvious discriminator between cheap scopes and better
ones is the repeatability of their adjustments. The sports
writers continuously refuse to test scopes for repeatability because
they know that it will show up what junk is out there.

I agree with Clark that a cheap scope is a good match for a cheap
..22, particularly if you can adjust the objective for 50 yard
parallax. Even the cheapest scopes are coming with adjustable
objectives now, but non-adjustable ones can be adjusted, which
I cover on my web page.

Hi,

Simmons has changed dramatically in the past 2 years, recent
experience is not a good indicator of their quality.

After Simmons was bought by Blount/Weaver, it was repositioned as
a lower-end scope company. Formerly Weaver and Simmons competed
directly in the lower-middle-end arean. Blount immediately raised
wholesale prices on Weaver scopes and are now marketing them as
middle-end scopes.

Simmons and Weaver now are marketed together in much the same fashion as
Bushnell and Bosch&Lomb, another pair owned by the same company, where
Bushnell is the low-end and B&L is the middle-end.

Inside two years, Simmons manufacturing of Aetec scopes moved from Japan
to the Philippines to PR China. Quality suffered with each move, in my
opinion. I would not buy a Simmons scope at this time unless it is NOS
(new old stock) from Japan. They are also doing bizarre things like
offering 20 power scopes with 1/2" adjustments. ???

I'm in the process of updating the rec.guns FAQ, in the meantime
read my Cheap Scope page to see why I hate cheap scopes:

I have several Simmons scopes they have all served me well. I have a Simmons
Gold Medal 2x7 Handgun scope on the my Encore with a 308 barrel. Big recoil
and the scope handles it well.
Also I have 3 Aetecs that I like very well. Last deer season my sling came lose
on my favorite hunting rifle and I dropped it. The gun fell about 4 feet such
that the scope absorbed 100% of the shock. The sunshade was dented big time and
pulled loose from the the threads of the objective end of the scope. I removed
it. I continued hunting with it and took a deer the next day after I checked
zero. After the season was over I shipped it to Simmons to check out as I
wanted to be able to relie on it the next year. About 3 weeks later I recieved
the package back from them. They sent me a brand new scope with sunshade. No
cost. Nothing. I think I will continue doing business with them.
