I am looking to buy a home defense pistol for my wife. Does anyone know
what the key differences are between the Browning Hi-Power and the Browning
BDM? Does anyone know why the BDM is no longer produced? I am knew to this
newsgroup, but I have been looking for an answer to this question for
awhile. Or, if anyone has a different gun to recommend, I'm all ears. She
has fired a few 9mm pistols at a local range, and the Browning Hi-Power
seemed to be the most comfortable for her.

Thanks in advance,

Steve

The BDM is a selective double action pistol with a screw to set the trigger
action to "double action only".
The Hi-Power is a single action pistol.

I guess the BDM is no longer produced because it couldn't compete with other
brands.

BDM stands for Browning Dual Mode....was an idea that didn't sell. High
capacity magazines run over $100....If she likes the Hi-Power, by all means
buy her one. It's an excellent pistol.

dear steve i own a p35 / high power it's single action 15 shot if you have
the hammer at 1/2 cock with one in the chamber , you have to thumb the hammer
back to full cock to fire the wepon. the BDM is a double action . with the
hammer in the down position with a round in the chamber with the safety on .
to fire you disengage the safety aim and pull the trigger . go to a range and
ask to see both then make up your mind .pnd water.

Two of my friends bought them for $299. They really
shoot quite well. If you can handle a 10 round mag
and not freak out - it's a bargain.

Tell the SO to buy you a hi-cap for the holiday
of relevant diety.

bye

The BDM is double action and has a neat switch by which you can make it
double action only. It is also a little thinner. Also, the mag holds 15
rounds, rather than 13.

# Does anyone know why the BDM is no longer produced?

The magazine ban made them no longer competitive with smaller,
lighter guns. The High-power still gets made because there are millions of
old high-cap mags available for it.. The mags don't interchange,
unfortunately... I stocked up on BDM high caps before the mag ban, BTW... No,
they are not for sale<G>...

The BDM is a very good gun, reliable and with a good trigger. It is
also rather thin for a high-capacity 9mm. Tho the finish seems to scratch
easily. The double action-only switch is a good option for home defense
because the trigger action doesn't change after the first shot and distract
you at a key moment. A reasonable option is a CZ75/85 or its clones, BTW.
