I'm going to get a 22 rimfire sooner or later for plinking and shooting
the occasional small, helpless animal... I was wondering how these guns
compare in terms of accuracy... I assume the bolt action 581 will be
more accurate than the 10/22, but by how much? Also, if anyone has
either of these guns, can you comment on the reliability of them?

Thanks, Seth wsro...@wixer.bga.com

Hi,
You seem to have picked the best of both breeds for your choice, both
guns are superbly accurate, as non-match guns go and very reliable, given
proper cleaning.
I own a 10/22 and have never been disappointed in either accuracy or
reliability, and they are easy to pick up used for about $125.
When I was going through a Gunsmithing school in Oregon, my instructor
had built three Benchrest target guns or the 581 actions and admitted
that even with factory barrel and stock, it is one damn fine gun. A bit
of trigger tuning and ammo experimenting should yeild you excellet results.
Which is better? I guess that depends on how fast you want to shoot,
and whether you want to trade a bit of accuracy away for a little more
speed, or if you want to trade in a wee hair of reliability for accuracy.
I hope I havent made your choice harder, and if you happen to find
a used 581 that you don't want, drop me a message :-)
