although I don't have any experiance with the colt i can vouch for the
quality of the ruger. i purchased a 4 inch GP100 SS (for $299 new, you may
want to shop around before you purchase)

THE SECOND AMENDMENT IS THE PEOPLES GUARANTEE OF THE OTHER AMENDMENTS.
#I am looking to buy a .357 revolver. I can get a used Python (blue 4",
#with holster wear, but tight otherwise) for $395 or a new Ruger GP100 SS
#4" for $380. Any opinions on which is the better buy? If it it helps,
#I am fairly new to handguns, though I have shot a variety and the
#primary purpose of this gun is home defense, though I do want it fun to
#shoot.
The Python has a reputation for being a truly wonderful gun, and I'd
be suspicious of anyone who would let one go for $395. But even
assuming that there's nothing wrong with it, I would still suggest
that you go with the gun that fits _your_ hand better, because that
will determine how well you'll be able to shoot it. For me, that
would be the GP100. For you, it might be the Python. Have someone
show you the proper way to grip a revolver, then hold each one while
you dry fire it (double action) several times, watching the sights
carefully. If the movement of the sights while you pull the trigger
is noticeably less for either gun, buy it. If not, go with the
Python.
My two cents...
I'd go with the Python. Nothing wrong with the Ruger, but y9ou'll be able to
get your investment back from the Colt.

IMHO,They are both fine guns, rugers are very durable the colt may not be. The
Python is incredible. Mine has an action that is smooth as silk and is like a
fine watch. It also cost about as much as a fine watch. They have a reputation
for being rather fragile and overpriced. Mine has not given me any problems but
I dont shoot it much. I use my Rugers all the time.
The GP100 has a reputation for being durable and a good value. IMHO if you can
only have one, go with the ruger, it is a work horse and you can use any type
of .357.
Colts cost more and have a very nice action and actually I think look better
too. The ruger is indistructible.
Both guns will hold thier value but that is not an issue to me because I have
sold a few guns only to go out and replace them later. I no longer sell my
guns and I would not do it because you will often loose some money, not to
mention that you will no longer have the gun.
I also have a taurus and like it but I prefer my usa made revolvers. Smiths and
Rugers and One Colt 6 inch python.
If you can, buy them all and enjoy.

I have a blued GP100 that I really like. They are very strong
reliable guns however the above price seems a bit high. Pythons are
the top of the line .357. Excellent guns with super triggers, if the
gun has been taken care of.
Only real problem with the Colt is that it is based on an older
lockwork which requires more hand fitting. This is both a plus and a
minus. On the plus side is the superb fit, finish and action. On the
down side, it takes a little more maintence to keep it there and it is
a bunch harder to work on. You will really need to find a good
gunsmith if anything needs repairing.

Kinda like sayin' "I can get a Rolls Royce or an F-150 pick up ... any
difference?"
Yup. There's a difference. One's a match pistol in street trim, the other's a
farm tool that will accept anythin that fills the holes in it.
