A firearm is NOT a magic talisman that you can wave at an intruder an
have him run away. Once deadly force in any form (gun, knife, axe, ice
pick, baseball bat) comes into play the situation changes dramatically
and the stakes get raised to life and death. One MUST be willing to use
that force if the intruder does not either flee or obey instantly and
exactly. Otherwise all you may be doing is giving him another weapon to
use against you. If you are unable to face taking a life, you are
better off without a deadly weapon.
The first thing that you both need to do is take a handgun safety class,
one that covers safety, the different types of handguns, how they work,
some of the legal and moral ramifications of using deadly force for self
defense, as well as a practical portion where you get to shoot while
under instruction.
Then, if you feel confident and are willing to train and practice, go
ahead and buy a firearm. For home defense you would want to consider
either a revolver (the Original Point and Click interface) or a pump
action shotgun (my preference). And practice, practice, practice.
