Hi there,

I am considering buying a Winchester Model 22 SxS, but can find very little
info. on it on the web. Serial # is 162627. I intend to use it for mainly
rough and upland shooting over a Brittany spaniel. I have been looking for a
Spanish SxS with a straight stock, but am tempted by this gun because my
other hunting arms are a Winchester Model 69A .22, and a Winchester Model 70
Lightweight Carbine in .243. I would appreciate it if someone can help with
any of the following questions (value is something I have been able to
find);

-what is the reputation of this model for reliability and strength?

-when was the production period for this model?

-when was the likely production date for this gun?

-are there any particular problems to look for?

The gun has been described as in very good condition, intact blueing, no
wood damage. Choking is full and half. Pistol grip, beavertail forend.

Ta,

TOM

Full choke is too tight to work over a pointer. You need to look for a
shotgun choked modified-I/C, or a shotgun with screw-in chokes.

Thanks Larry. If the gun checks out, I will probably have the chokes opened
out by a gunsmith. That's if it isn't a classic that I should keep original!
FYI, most sporting shotguns brought into New Zealand seem to be choked full
and half. Duck shooting rules over here!

Well, according to my reference, the gun was subcontracted to Laurona of
Spain and was produced in limited numbers starting in 1975. Should be 12 ga,
28" with double triggers and semi beavertail forearm. Black chrome finish,
matted rib and hand engraved receiver. Should be in the $800-950 USD ball
park.

I don't know what "half" is, but you might try it using the half barrel
first, and see how it works. No use letting some smith mess with the chokes
unless it is necessary. Might be able to install screw in choke tubes if
there is enough metal out there.

Good Luck
RW
