Thinking of purchasing A Pedersoli Creedmore Rolling Block Rifle .45-70 Gov't.
Using a tang mounted aperture rear sight and a globe front sight,
I want to know what kind of accuracy can I get out of it at 100 yards.
Is 3" (5 shot groups) or better at 100 yards too optimistic for factory loaded
ammo? How punishing is the recoil for a rifle weighing 10 lbs. assume shooting
a 300 gr. bullet load?

Regards,
Leo

Great rifle. I almost bought one, but was beat to the punch by another
.45-70-phile. I spoke with the purchaser later, who owns several .45-70s and a
couple Pedersoli. He said that at 100 yards he almost gets bored -- at the
time he was searching a much longer range so that he could really test out the
capabilities of the cartridge-weapon combination. You should have a lot of fun
with that. BTW -- this fellow is about 5'8" 165 and shoots all day with a PAST
pad -- thus, I guess recoil is not too bad.

Hi Leo,
A friends grandfather has an old Navy arms model replica.
I believe it's the same as the one your looking at and the old
man can make that rifle do astonishing things. He's had it, what
seems like forever but he regularly makes one big hole groups
at 100 yds. with it using the aperture sights and hand loads.
I don't think your going to get the full potential out of it until
you make your own for it but you shouldn't be disappointed. I
have fired it and it's not unpleasant at all. I think my 30-06 (8.5lbs.)
with 180/220gr. bullet hand loads kicks more. It's more like a shotgun
than a rifle because of the heavy barrel.

I have a Pedersoli 45-70 in the remington rolling block pattern...I get about 1
1/2 " at 100yds w/300gr bullets...I get better accuracy with a full case of
black powder and soft lead 500 gr...recoil is stout, but not unpleasant...

I have a 1992-vintage Pedersoli RB, not the Creedmore but the long
barreled "buffalo rifle". I fitted a globe front and tang ladder
sight to it, and used it in CBA competition.

The bore on my rifle is very tight - .454" groove diameter - but
extremely smooth and donsistent, and it didn't want to shoot
plain-based cast bullets at all. However it did extremely well with
the RCBS 400-grain GC bullet sized .457" and IMR4227 powder. In
competiton I'd usually get 20-shot aggregates of 1.13" to 1.25" at 100
yards, and this usually consisted of two, 5-shot groups around .75-.85
moa, with the other two groups throwing a flyereach to increase the
agg. Frustrating, but still outstanding accuracy IMO. I had not
expected this level of accuracy when I bought the rifle.

I've never shot jacketed bullets in it, so I don't know how it would
do with them. The American RIfleman tested the Pedersoli Creedmoor in
January 1992 and obtained an average of 3.40" with three types of
jacketed factory loads.

a friend and i were just talking about this style rifle. he mentioned
reading a book where the springfield engineers were testing a similar rifle
when they first came out (over 100 years ago), and they could hit a 6 foot
diameter target at 3500 yards pretty regularly. with open sights no less.

Thanks to all who replied.

I am now definitely going to buy one in the near future and shoot only cast
lead bullet reloads.

Cabela's is listing a Davide Pedersoli Rolling Block .45-70 Gov't. for $700 (On
Sale for $650). This is a standard Remington Rolling Block replica with a 30"
octagon barrel plus a globe front & vernier rear aperture sight. This is not
their Creedmore Target Model rifle. Is this the typical asking price for such a
rifle?
