Can anyone advise how to remove the factory rubber grips on a S&W J-
frame revolver? I am posting for a friend. He says there are no
screw heads visible and doesn't want to scratch the frame with
unnecessary probing. Searching the group and the net yields no useful
results. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

There are different grips for various J-frame revolvers. Mine has
Hogue "Bantam" grips. Mine came with instructions for removing and
re-installing the grips, and included a small plastic "U"-shaped
tool to use in the disassymbly. It does says that if the tool is lost,
you can use plastic credit cards (two per side). There is apparently
a pin attached near the bottom of the handle frame (they call it the
"the stock pin". They say to spread apart the two halves of the grips
near the bottom-rear of the handle...spread them as little as possible,
just enough to disengage the fixed pin from each grip, and then
"simply slide it off".

When you buy the grips from Houge as a after market part they come with
a plastic dual wedge piece. You take that piece and slide it between
the frame and the grips to spread the grips slightly apart then slide
them down off of the frame. I took a popcicle stick, cut it in half,
sanded the rounded ends to a wedge and use them to spread the grips.
Works ok.

If you are at a store that sells the Houge grips look at the directions
on the package If what I wrote was not clear.

Thanks for the replies! The information was quite useful and my
friend was able to remove his grips without marring the metal.
