Has Colt resumed manufacturing the Light Rifle? I was unaware of this.
Regardless, if you have stumbled across a Light Rifle for a good price, you
should consider yourself lucky. It's an excellent concept and design
although I cannot comment on Colt's quality as I have never handled a Colt
Light Rifle. If it doesn't have a muzzle brake, I'd think a rifle that
weighs less than 5 pounds would get your attention quickly when you touched
one off in .300 Winchester Magnum.

Buying any new rifle seems to be a roll of the dice these days. But as
I recall, there was some sort of scope mounting issue with those
rifles. If it's what you want, and the price is right--go for it. But
since it's a discontinued item, make sure it functions properly before
buying it. Also, don't leave the store without a suitable scope mount.
For some reason I believe there was a clearance problem with most of
the available hardware.
Good luck,

#Paul, check first to see if there's been a factory recall on these.
#I've never had one, but I recall there having been a problem with
#some of 'em, specific nature of problem not remembered.
The recall was only on certain 30.06 rifles. If in doubt you can
contact Colt to verify by serial number.

I purchased a Colt Light Rifle in 30.06 about a year and a half ago.
I have been reluctant to post in this thread as I have fired it very
little. But I will add my observations anyway, particularly in regard
to jdarph's post.
These rifles come with a set of aluminum rings with an integrated
base. I mounted a Simmons V-Tac 3-9 I had in the cabinet on mine. I
had also read scope mounting can be problematic. The critical area is
the clearance of the bolt handle with the eye-bell (ocular housing).
Even with the modest size of the bell on the Simmons, the clearance is
QUITE close. AFAIK there is no aftermarket maker of bases/rings for
them, so make sure whatever scope you plan on mounting will clear the
handle.
As I mentioned in a previous post, there is a recall on certain
30.06s. The rifle I bought was previously owned by some judge, and
was purchased as a consignment sale from a dealer. In the box with
thh papers was a letter confirming the rifle had been sent to Colt for
the recall fix.
As I said I have only shot it a few times, just to get it on the
paper. Using M72 it was making one medium hole at 25 yards. The few
shots at 100 yards were a little over an inch.
General comments: seeking light weight, you give up a hinged
floor-plate for a blind magazine; for a light rifle, a 24" barrel is
probably over-long, but maybe not with the .300 WinMag; I am not
particularly recoil sensitive, but the .06 did not seem bad at all, I
would imagine the .300 will get your attention though.
Around $450 seems to be the going price for one nib. I'd say buy it.
As I do not hunt, I got mine just for fun, and felt a need for an .06
bolt gun. Besides that, a lot of Colt's recently discontinued small
production products seem to ultimately appreciate.
When it comes to guns, or any hobby for that matter, object is no
money.

#The Colt Light Rifle used Weaver Grand Slam Bases, these are steel
#instead of the usual aluminum.
Not to dispute what Mike has posted, but the factory rings that came
with my Colt Light Rifle are not steel, and the base is integral to
each ring, i.e., the rings are not detachable from the base which is
screwed to the receiver.

Sorry folks but I goofed on the email address:
mkbjo...@netzero.com
Well I should explain how I came by my steel Weaver mounts. When
I purchased my new Colt in 300 Win Mag the original mounts had been
stolen out of the box or never shipped with the rifle. A call to Colt
customer service put me on the waiting list for the next shipment of
Weaver Grand Slams. Weaver never made the aluminum bases for this
rifle that I know of. Perhaps it was believed that the recoil in a
light rifle would be to much for them. The receiver contour and hole
spacing in the same as the original UltraLight Arms model 24.
Thanks for the additional information on the scope bases. That will
be useful if I decide to mount a scope with a larger ocular bell on my
rifle.
