Does anyone have any experience with this handgun. It seems to me a
very capable gun for $250. Thank you.

It is reliable with RN-FMJ and Glasers. Only jams are with SWC, so far.
several hundred rounds have been fired through these pistol. It was
reliable from the first round. Have to say this is abnormal. I want one to
try for myself.

They have a massively bad trigger. About 20 lbs.
And I have read a number of remarks, not good, om AMT
reliability and quality. Sometimes it takes some gunsmith tinkering
to make 'em work right, but then they are not exspensive guns to begin
with.
If I was looking for a small and light .45, I'd check out
the Para-Ordinance alloy mini-.45s. I have handled a few
at gunshows and they are cute. More expensive but PO
seems to have a good reputation for their guns.
I have no idea how good or how reliable these little
.45s are. But I see the Para-Ordinances at most gun shows
I attend. For what its worth, I see relatively few AMTs
at gun shows.
Their .380s used to be common at shows, but seem to
not be popular anymore.

Slack!
The large amount of trigger pull has its' pros and cons. Requires a lot of
practice to maintain accuracy, but makes it very save to carry without worry
of accidental discharge (remember, this is a DOA pistol).
When this pistol first hit the market it was one of the first compact 45s
available. Today, I believe, you have better choices, but you are correct,
for the price it's not bad. But if you can't get use to the trigger pull
and maintain accuracy, do you want to trust your life to it?
It's also somewhat difficult to break down and clean.

Based on my experience I would not go for the Backup. The .380 was the
smallest .380 made. I wish I had bought the "best" .380 instead (best
concealable .380 is a Kahr 9mm!).
How small is it? Glock makes some very small and light guns that work.
Most any
"compact" 45 like the HK USP or SIG 245 are concealable. 1911's come in
sizes
down to very small from Springfield, Kimber, ParaOrdenacne and Colt all of
whom
have better reputations for quality than AMT. (Colt has been spotty in the
90s).
I'd choose from this list and pass on the AMT.
"Ask the man who owns one." - whose motto was that, anyway?
Look at the Kimber compact. It will meet with an inch the AMT and is
a far the better gun.
Not my provider's views.

How 'bout that nice trigger?
Andrew "FF"
It's no target pistol. It is only what it was designed for. A compact
and reasonably powerful personal protection concealed weapon. For that,
in my opinion, it does a good job. I shoot one occasionally just to
keep familiarity and to make certain it's working properly. It's been
reliable for me with no feed or extraction problems. It does have a
long and heavy trigger pull but that's it's only safety. On mine at
least, keeping in mind it's purpose, I don't mind the trigger pull. At
least it's smooth. It can still be shot with reasonable accuracy with a
little practice.
The AMT backup is truly tiny for a .45. A Colt officers model 1911
(alloy frame) is a quarter inch thicker, an inch longer and an inch
taller. They weigh about the same. The Backup is almost identical in
overall size to a Colt Mustang .380 though the Mustang is noticably
lighter. Without question Colt is easier to to shoot accurately but it
doesn't conceal nearly as easily.
