I'm a newbie on this group though have been interested in shooting for
a number of years. I have recently bought a Ruger M77 mark II in
22-250 calibre. I was wondering what the 250 means, and any comments
about the rifle.
It also has a 6 - 24 x 42 Tasco scope on it. I use it predominantly
for shooting Foxes and Kangaroos at ~ 300 - 400 yards.
Cheers.

# In the 1930's a number of experimenters worked to develop a 22 caliber centerfire cartridge based on the efficient 250 Savage case.
# <SNIP> .. and called the cartridge the 22-250.

It was because it started out with a 250-3000 Savage cartridge.
I seem to recall you may have been the one that asked the 'sniper rifle' or
'suppressor's questions. If so, thanks for your post clearing up what you
actually were doing.

Believe it has to do with the 'parent' case size. There used to be some
calibers that were referred to as 250 Savage and / or 300 Savage. Both
are now pretty much 'extinct' firearms, although I know personally of two
of them (300 Savage) in lever action. I believe the .22-250 comes from
the 250 Savage moniker, 'specially since I have some resized .22-250 brass
with 250 Savage headstamping. Same sort of thing where .270 Winchester
brass is necked down from .30-'06, and .243 Winchester brass can be made
from .308Win (military round).

It is a commercial cartridge based on a "wildcat" where some plucky
adventurer took the .250-3000 Savage and necked it down to .22 caliber, thus
".22-250". It dates back to the 1930's. It's a good long-range varmit
cartridge, and the Ruger should serve you well.

The .22-250 Remington is the .250 Savage necked down to .22 caliber,
thus the .22-250. It first started out as an Wildcat. HTH
