Hello all,

I'm a newbie on this group though have been interested in shooting for
a number of years. I have recently bought a Ruger M77 mark II in
22-250 calibre. I was wondering what the 250 means, and any comments
about the rifle.
It also has a 6 - 24 x 42 Tasco scope on it. I use it predominantly
for shooting Foxes and Kangaroos at ~ 300 - 400 yards.

Cheers.

# 22-250 calibre. I was wondering what the 250 means,

It's a necked down 250 Savage.

The 22-250 is a necked down 250-3000 Savage case.

This was originally a "wildcat" cartridge based on the then new .250 Savage
case

from Speer reloading #12

# In the 1930's a number of experimenters worked to develop a 22 caliber centerfire cartridge based on the efficient 250 Savage case.

# <SNIP> .. and called the cartridge the 22-250.

According to
http://www.reloadbench.com/cartridges/22250.html

It was because it started out with a 250-3000 Savage cartridge.

I seem to recall you may have been the one that asked the 'sniper rifle' or
'suppressor's questions. If so, thanks for your post clearing up what you
actually were doing.

The .22-250 was first produced as a wildcat based on the old .250 Savage
cartridge. The .250 Savage is also known as the .250-3000 because with the
87gr. bullet you got 3000fps. from factory loads when it first came out.

Believe it has to do with the 'parent' case size. There used to be some
calibers that were referred to as 250 Savage and / or 300 Savage. Both
are now pretty much 'extinct' firearms, although I know personally of two
of them (300 Savage) in lever action. I believe the .22-250 comes from
the 250 Savage moniker, 'specially since I have some resized .22-250 brass
with 250 Savage headstamping. Same sort of thing where .270 Winchester
brass is necked down from .30-'06, and .243 Winchester brass can be made
from .308Win (military round).

It is a commercial cartridge based on a "wildcat" where some plucky
adventurer took the .250-3000 Savage and necked it down to .22 caliber, thus
".22-250". It dates back to the 1930's. It's a good long-range varmit
cartridge, and the Ruger should serve you well.

In about 1915 Charles Newton designed the 250 Savage. In the late 1920s and
early 1930s a number of people began experimenting with the 250 Savage
necked down to .22. J.E. Gebby and J. Bushnell Smith called their version
the .22 Varminter and copyrighted the name. Most gunsmiths, when chambering
for the .22 version of the 250 simply called it the 22-250 to avoid
copyright troubles.. Ken

The 22-250 was a cartridge developed using a necked down version of the
250-3000 Savage.
The bullet diameter is .224, thus the 22 and the case comes from the
250-3000, thus the 250.

The 22-250 is so called because one of the developers (J.E.Gebby) called it the
22 Varminter and copywrighted the name. In order to make rifles or ammo without
paying copywright fees others called it the 22-250.

250 stands for the 250-3000 caliber. It's a 25 caliber cartridge and
the 22-250 is necked down to 22 caliber.

The .22-250 Remington is the .250 Savage necked down to .22 caliber,
thus the .22-250. It first started out as an Wildcat. HTH
