In simple terms, Who makes them and how they make them.
The FAL (Fusil Automatique Legere) is the orginal. After 1953 the US
bought some (3,303) and trialed them as did a bunch of other countries.

ie. The UK, Canada, Australia. (5000,2000,20).
The Last three set up a Rifle streering committee and changed the rifle to
their own specs. And came up with the L1A1 and C1A1.

The US desided that the gun didn't have suffient obsolescence to be a good
gun so stuck to a pre-WW2 design (Nice and old).

The M1A1 is a .30 Carbine US made rifle (It has nothing in common with the
above except it's a gun.)

The South Africans make another called the R1A1.

The original idea was for the FAL/L1A1 to be .280, right?
What sort of rifle would this have made? Was it a short
cartridge or what? Anything like the original idea for
the .270-ish Garand before MacArthur stepped in?
