As is with most governments, the UK got what they voted for and therefore
deserved.
After spending the next 5 years in prison, I believe Mr. Clarke will be
actively participating in the process of changing inane laws.
To me, the worst part of the story is in the last two sentences:
`Judge Christopher Critchlow said: "This is an unusual case, but in
law there is
no dispute that Mr Clarke has no defence to this charge.
"The intention of anybody possessing a firearm is irrelevant." '
It seems to me that the intention of somebody possessing a firearm, as
determined
by that person's subsequent action, is paramount.
Never been a brit, but I'll bet they don't allow felons to vote or serve in office.
John
You are probably wrong... see
"While 11 states in the U.S. have bans that disfranchise a total of
2.1 million people who have fully completed their felony sentences,
and ten of these states have essentially permanent bans on some or all
offenders, virtually no other democratic nation disfranchises its
citizens after completion of sentence. In fact, many democratic
nations permit, and even enable, people with felony convictions to
vote in prison. In Europe, nearly half, or 17 of its countries, allow
prisoners to vote, and some but not all prisoners may vote in 11
others. The remaining 12 European nations deny prisoners the vote, but
generally do not bar parolees and probationers from the ballot box."

I'm betting his voting rights, if taken, will be restored.
Wouldn't matter anyway, even if he can't vote he can still be a poster boy.
So was Tony Martin but it didn't do any good. See:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Martin_(farmer) for what appears to be an
accurate story. The burglars got three years and he got life.

Agreed, makes it a bit harder to be vocal from inside prison for the rest of
one's life. But Mr. Clarke will be out in 5.
And the sheep still have the government they wanted, so I doubt there will
be any change.
Can't say as I feel bad for them; they did it to themselves.
Why do people keep holding this guy up as a poster boy?
He shot a couple of crooks as they were running away in the dark, hid
the gun at his mother's house, and didn't call the police (which might
have saved the life of the guy that died).
Also, in the article you provided a link for, it states that his
sentence was reduced to manslaughter (on an insanity plea), that he
was paroled in 2003 (after serving 3 years), and that he has been
campaigning for political parties in the UK since then.
This wouldn't pass as self defense in courts in the US, except maybe
Texas, and then, only in exceptional circumstances.

I guess this may be a good example of what it is to be a "subject" vs a
"citizen".

More's the pity. More dead bad guys = less crime.
Being a criminal is or should be dangerous, even life threatening. That it is
not is a sad commentary on the society that tolerates it.

Just because it's the law doesn't mean it has to make sense.
I'm concerned aboiut someone trying to do it to me.

Tony Martin got the shaft too, but he isn't free to do anything about it.
