Last year I asked the group about building a nice rifle. Took
everyone's opinion on the Savage 10FP and finally after never seeing
one in a local shop, my local dealer had one in stock. Picked it up
and hoping to get going in time for summer.

I just have a problem deciding the rest of the parts. My other rifle
is a basic 10/22T with a 9x scope. For the Savage I want to mostly
shoot at 100 yards, not sure what scope I should look at.

Seems like allot of people highly recommend the Super Sniper 10x40.
Price is within my budget but I'm not sure if 10x is enough for
shooting at 100 yards. Then I saw a few mounts that are 0moa 20moa,
I'm not sure on the difference, I read that I should be using 20moa?

Any tips or suggestions are greatly welcome!

Rob

My 2 cents. I'd definitely stick with a fixed scope as opposed to a variable. They're cheaper, more rugged and likely to give you fewer problems.

Personally, I'd probably go with a 6x. (nothing wrong with 10x) If I could afford it I'd go Leupold for both the scope, mounts and rings. Whatever you do don't scrimp. Buy quality. While I might hedge on the scope and look at Nikon, Bushnell 3200/420 or Millet, I'd definitely go with Leupold for the mounts and rings.

And why did you wait for the dealer to stock one? Most dealers are happy to order one from their distributer/wholesaler.

What is your budget? For 100 yds target shooting, I suggest you get a
higher power, with 10x you I can barely see my 3/4" red dot stickers on the
paper. There are lots of better choices than the "super sniper" model you
mention. - CW

10x is enough magnification for six times that distance.

I have a 10FP and a 112BVSS. I have 6-24 Bausch & Lomb Elite 6300(?)s on both
of them. I only shoot at 600 yards and they do just fine.

I have a Leupold on my 10/22T and it's a great scope. My budget is
under $500 but not too much over, I need rings and mount as well.

The reason I wanted to wait is I couldn't find any local dealer who
had a Savage in stock or anyone who owned one. Also when I asked about
ordering one from my local dealer, the back order list was about 2
months. My friend bought a firearm recently and I just decided to call
again, they had one locally, checked it out and didn't mind the
trigger.

I want to stay under $500 for the scope. I read a lot of good reviews
of the SS scope but my biggest worry is it's only 10x. I had a some
what hard time using 9x on my 22 rifle at 100 yards.

Leupold rings and mounts are neither high quality nor particularly strong.
There are much better choices when considering a good system to mount a
scope on a rifle. For example, all steel Weaver type rings and bases are a
superior design to Leupold/Redfield.

Hi Rob,

Maybe you've got needs beyond mine, I find my 3-9x40 to be plenty of
scope for my shooting needs. At 100m I set my scope for 4 power and
shoot. Out to 350-400m this is generally the accepted range for a 3-9
or 4-12 by 40-50mm scope. Excessive magnification can lead to all
kinds of shooting ills.

Excessive magnification will magnify every little twitch, including
your pulse. Pull back the zoom to 3 or 4 power. What twitches? What
pulse? You'll have a much steadier sight picture. Your eye will
naturally find the center of the target. You may highlight the center
with a dot sticker, if needed- but I bet you won't need it.

Remember 100m is not very far away. Many people today target shoot at
100m using iron sights-no scope at all.

Interesting on how we all differ on the quality of things. Just goes to show that it takes all kinds to make the world go around.

While I have a number of Weaver mounts and rings, I guess the "Tip Off" line just never impressed me. It sort of prejudices me against their other rings. Then again, Leupold's "Rifleman" series doesn't grab me either.

For what it's worth, for .22s I think BKL are the absolute best. I wish they'd apply themselves to centerfire solutions. I've been tempted to try a 3/8" dovetail mount with BKL rings on my .338)

ROB: Whatever brand get, don't scrimp on rings/mounts. I think that we can all agree. The difference in cost is negligible and the results are really worth it.

If you are shooting exclusively at targets on a range from a bench at
100 yards, then use a target scope. A Weaver T36 (36 power fixed) is
about $400 from most suppliers. It really makes a difference in the
groups you shoot if that's what you're interested in. It will be
unsuitable for hunting however. If you intend to hunt varmints then I
would recommend an 8 to 32 variable to cover both activities. There's
no such thing as to much power for bench type target shooting.

20 MOA bases are for very long ranges, 600 yards and out, and not
necessary for what you intend.

You should use as sturdy a one piece base as you can find, they can
increase the stiffness of your action by as much as 50% when properly
installed.

Reducing the magnification does not make the twitches and your pulse
go away, it just makes you blissfully unaware of them. :)

If you are trying to shoot 1/4" groups, that's important information
that you want to have.

Like you say, it depends on your needs. If you want to shoot deer at
75 yards or your rifle can't hold 2" groups, it's not important...

I personally set my 6-24x40 B&L scope at 24x for 100 yards (or 600),
but then my eyes are not so great.

Good point, I forgot about the jitters from a high power scope. It's
not very far but I'm new to rifles in general and longer than 25 yard
shooting.

I just read a article about cadets shooting out to 600 yards with M16
and ironsights. Very impressive!

I agree, just because you can not see it does not mean it is not there.

I had a 4 to 12 power scope on a 22-250 and was getting some odd looking
groups. Left to right was fine but a large distance between shots
vertically, if you want to call about 3/4 of an inch large. When I put a 6
to 20 power scope on it, I could see the cross hairs jumping vertically
every time my pulse did. By seeing this and learning to control it, the
groups went from slightly over an inch high to less than 3/4 of an inch.
