Hi ya folks,

I just purchased a Remington 513T targetmaster last night. This is a .22RF
heavy barrel rifle which is not currently being manufactured. I took it
to the range to check it out and met a smallbore shooter there with the
same rifle. Mine has the standard redfield peep sights that the rifle came
from the factory with, but the guy had a nice(LOOOONG) Unitrl(sp?) or other
scope on it(I think it was a 18X).

I guess I would first like to know how other folks with this firearm have
liked it and what type of accuracy you've gotten. The guy at the range was
shooting in a ballpark of ~.6"-1" groups(5 shot) at 50 yards with not top
grade ammo. How were the Rem factory RF barrels in this era?

What things can I do to accurize it? are the scopes hard to find to fit this?
I didn't want to tap more holes in it, but would rather leave it original.
which means using the 4 inline scope mounting holes.
or is the 513 more suitable for plinking use? Either way, I really like this
rifle.

Any info from 'people in the know' would be appreciated.

regards,

tom

I had a 513 many years ago. It would shoot at best about the same.
Compared to other rifles in its price range, it was about equal. Although
not nearly as accurate as the Win. 52, Rem. 37 or Rem. 40X, it was a good
starter rifle for youngsters.

You'll probably get best accuracy with Eley Tenex or Eley Benchrest Gold.
RWS R50 is another make to try.

Epoxy bed the receiver and make sure the barrel is free floating.
It may shoot a bit more accurate after doing this.

: are the scopes hard to find to fit this?

No. You can use one of several externally adjustable scopes such as
the Unertl or Lyman Targetspot. These oft times are found at gun shows.

Have had a 513T for a number of years. Shoots sub inch groups better than
most other rifles I have seen. While it does not compete with an Anshutz,
it gives them a run for their money, for a lot less cost.
After it all, the gun can probably outshoot the shooter.

The range this rifle shoots sub 1-in. groups wasn't mentioned.
Let's assume it's 50 yards. Considering the fact that a good
smallbore competitor can call their shots within 1/8th MOA when
using a scope, the bullet holes will appear up to about 1/2 inch
from call, or 1 MOA. If the range is 100 yards, the bullet hole
will again appear up to about 1/2 inch from call, or 1/2 MOA.

With a rifle/ammo combination like this, it's definitely not
outshooting the shooter.

When aperture sights are used, a good smallbore shooter can call
shots within about 1/3rd MOA. A .22 that groups about an inch
will still print bullet holes up to about 5/8ths inch away from call.
It's still not shooting as accurate as the shooter calls the shots.

All of which boils down to one simple situation; no .22 rimfire
rifle/ammo combination shoots as accurate as what can be called.
That's no different that highpower shooters using centerfire ammo.
