I've been contemplating "aim point" type optics for it. The question is on
the scope mount style. I was wondering if the "no drill/tap" style that
replaces the rear sight are sturdy enough to handle "full house" hunting
ammo.
The planned use is deer/pig hunting with at least a 30mm zero magnification
red dot. I'm a little leary of the optics holding zero with magnum loads.
I'm not against drilling/tapping...but local gunsmiths (both of em) charge
an arm and a leg for everything.
Any experiences/thoughts are appreciated.

The S&W Performance Center will drill & tap it for $60 - see

Are you sure it isn't already drilled - can you see 3 filler screws
under the topstrap?

I've been using Ultradot, red dot , 30mm sights on both S&W .357 and
.44 Mag both of which utilize the existing, pre-drilled holes under
the rear sights. Both guns get a steady diet of full-house loads.
I've never had a problem of loosening or malfunction due to recoil.
You'll wnat to use blue Locktite and check tightness during the first
times you fire the gun after mounting the new scope.
Hope this helps.

After about 300 rounds of a mixture of 38spcl and 357, over the last
10 days, I have noticed no loss of zero. The red dot sight has proven
to be the best thing that ever came along to help my accuracy. My
686-6 was already drilled for a scope mounting rail. I removed the
rear sight and there were 3 holes already prepared. Several companies
make weaver type rails for this model pistol. Good luck with your
hunting regardless of what you do about the red dot.
