I'm interested in the MAS 49-type rifle and have a chance to buy an Arsenal
unissued MAS 49 locally for $250, but am only familure with the appearance
of the MAS 49/56 and was wondering what the differences were, difference in
barrel length, flash hider, etc. What are the weight and length
differences.

I am also interested in the sucess or failure people have had loading good
ammo by resizing 6.5x55mm. While American 6.5x55 tends to be a little
undersized, it does measure .477" after being fired once in my Sweede.

A friend who has a FFL is interested in purchasing a few .MAS 49/56 .308
conversions. ( I returned mine for an original 7.5). In spite of my advice
against it he is insistent. Would appreciate if anyone who has purchased a
..308 conversion and is happy with it because it extracts and shoots good,
please provide the name and address (and purchase date) of the wholesaler
you purchased your functioning 308 from.

Thanks,

Chuck

Mike,

See picture of MAS 49 at http://members.aol.com/AIMSurplus/index.htm

Basically, the differences are the 49/56 has a shorter (about 2 inches)
barrel (but then they added a flash suppressor, so overall length is
actually longer) and the wood was cut back to accomodate that gigantic
grenade launcher sight. Pertinent numbers are:

MAS 49
MAS 49/56
Weight 10.4 lbs 8.6 lbs
w/o mag
Length 43.3 in.
43.4 in.
Barrel length 22.8 in. 20.7
in.
Muzzle velocity 2705 fps 2700 fps

also, the standard MAS 49 does not take a bayonet.

Enjoy, Bob

Both mine and my brothers function perfect. They were both purchased together
from SOG (Southern Ohio Gun) 1-800-944-GUNS about four months ago. Prices
are: $169 for a MAS49/56 in 7.5, $199 for one in .308, or $429 for one of each
plus a MAS36.

Good luck,

I have the MAS 49/56 from Century in .308.
Had the Extraction & Feeding problem that is floating around the
newsgroups too. Using CAVIM 7.62x51 NATO (17.50 per 100)@jgsales.com
I got about 8 rounds off before an extraction failure. Call this guy,
Ransom Co. Ransom's Tel. # 972-253-0108. He will tell you how to
FIX both prblems with the .308 MAS. I followed his directions and now
I have NO extraction or FEEDING problems, slick as a whistle. NO BS.
Just a little finish work Century failed to do.
I put 400 or so of the CAVIM mil spec rounds through it without a hitch so far.

For the sake of brevity here, just call him. Good Guy.
He also makes 20 and 30 round mags for the MAS, as well a
scope mount.
Overall a great deal and another case for simplicity.

How is this possible with out the violation of the law?

There was never an issue mag for the MAS 49/56 greater than 10
although Legion armorers in Algeria produced higher capacity Mag's.
(Which I must add would be a major collector item).

Not my provider’s views.

If this is the same guy that's in Texas,"Ransom", that supposedly sells
the MAS scope mount which he purports to be the same as the
original,(NOT TRUE) 'cause I got ripped off for $65-and no where close
to the original and badly made. He wants payment by checks or money
order only----BEWARE--NO REFUNDS no matter what,I tried. He is trying to
modify M1a mags to fit the MAS,forget it...At this time, I am in
discussion with a proper businessman to manufacture a scope mount for
the MAS which will be very close to the original with very tight
tolerances...so watch for it in rec.guns forum with the announcement. It
will be worth every penny of it and guaranteed high quality.....!!!

Will this mount place the scope over the center of the barrel?
Thanks,

Clueless here?

#How is this possible with out the violation of the law?
I'm not a lawyer. Ask Donnie Ransom

I have never stated that there was. I stated that Ransom makes these higher
capacity mags. (From 2 FN FAL mags), according to Ransom.
Maybe you should contact him.
Ransom's Tel. # 972-253-0108 in Texas.

Concerning doubts about the MAS 49/56.
I have a Smalltalk programming contract in the Twin Cities
area coming up at the end of September.
You are welcome to test this rifle for yourself, given you are
working at Control Data in Minnesota as implied by your e-mail address.
