Yeah - my son did something similar to me for Father's Day/Birthday. Never
would have purchased the gun myself, but once I opened the weird wrapped up
thing on the dining room table it was a part of me. Wouldn't be without it
now. Sentimental value is a powerful thing.

# While over at Pop Guns (a gun shop/indoor shooting range here in
# Indianapolis) shooting today, I made the mistake of glancing over at the
# long guns they had lined up against the wall. And, 'lo and behold, what did
# I see but a Mosin Nagant that was just crying out in name.

Loud isn't the word for those beasts. I have 5 of them in various models and
configurations and they're all ear splitting. If I'm taking one out to shoot
I always double up on the ear protection.
The other cool thing about the Nagant rifles is their propensity to spit a
great deal of fire out of the barrel. Take your new toy out after sunset and
watch the pyrotechnics. Impress your friend, delight the kiddies.
The M44 seems to be most prolific.
It's amazing that these rifles can still be had for $59 - $99 at just about
every public gun show . There must be an almost infinite supply of these
sitting in warehouses. They've been selling these for a long time and the
prices have remained stable or even dropped leading to the conclusion that
they won't become scarce anytime soon. They must have made over 20 million.
As best I can tell, it's a 91/30. The barrel at least was made in 1937 at
the Tula Arsenal.

## Congrats. What model did you get? What are the markings on the shank of
## the barrel, just ahead of the receiver ring? After you cleaned up the
## bore,
## how did it look? I suggest you detail strip it to clean everything up and
## get it back to proper working order. The wood can be cleaned with EasyOff
## oven cleaner. BTW, if you study the trigger action carefully, you can see
## how the letoff can be improved substantially with some simple hand tools.-

By the end of World War II, approximately 17.4 million M91/30 rifles
had been produced. I "think" all totaled the "Vintovka Mosina" in all
it's various configurations, produced in numerous countries exceeds
the 37-million mark. I doubt anyone knows the "true" production
numbers. Around 2-million were even produced in the U.S.
Interesting side note -- Because of the Russian Revolution some M1891
infantry rifles ordered from Remington Arms & New England Westinghouse
could not be delivered. Since they couldn't be delivered, they were
used to equip US National Guard, SATC and ROTC units. Designated "U.S.
Rifle, 7.62mm, Model of 1916", these are among the most obscure U.S.
service arms.
