Why do some of the Walther P99s have a black engraved logo and model #
on the slide and other P99s have a white engraved logo and model # on
the slide? Does it matter if they are .40 s&w or 9mm? Thanks

Okay, now I have to respond. Huh? I don't think that's what he asked. (I
need to create a FAQ on the
Walther P99). I don't think he was talking about the engraved La Chasse, etc.
models.

- Up until about 2Q2000, all P99s had roll-marked/stamped (engraved) "P99"
markings on them. The import markings (Interarms, Walther USA) were always
lasered on - the gold "paint" you speak of. The barrels also had the S/N
stamped on them.
- When the P99QA came out in late 2000, Walther Germany "lasered" the P99QA
markings on the slide. The QA markings are very crisp and neat.
- When S&W produced some 3000 .40S&W SLIDES for the Walther P99 to be mated to
German Walther frames in the Springfield, MA Walther USA "area" of Smith &
Wesson, these slides were lasered with "P99". The S&W slides do not exude the
quality of the German manufactured slides. The P99 lettering looks cheesy and
the decocker button paint does not stay on very well. This was a big mistake
by Walther to allow this to occur. Also, the slide serrations are not as
pointed and crisp as on German slides.
- As far as I know, all Walther German slides, with the exception of the P99QA
are still roll-stamped and the P99QA is lasered. The newer P99s have barrels
with lasered S/N on them and "Walther/USA LLC" lasered on the slides. If you
get it from Earl's Repair Service, he lasers his import mark on the barrel
hood. His are ALL German. He doesn't sell any of the S&W Slide/German Walther
Frame .40S&W.

The Walther German slides ALL have the proof eagle lasered or stamped on the
right rear of the slide and barrel hood. The 3000 some-odd .40S&W produced
slides with the lasered P99 logo DO NOT have this. ONLY .40S&W slides/guns
were produced. No 9mm slides were produced by S&W.

Regards,
James

Well, Smith & Wesson owns Walther now, so I don't think they had a choice.

S & W imports Walthers and controls the service in this country. They do
not own Walther.

False S&W didn't buy Walther. S&W has gotten a license from Walther to share
the frame. The P99 is entirely a Walther design. The 40 S&W version of the
SW99 uses S&W slides.

Matt, Its FALSE. Where did he get this stuff?

BTW, I own a Walther P99 (in 9mm) and liked it so much that when the S&W 99
came out (pre-boycott) I ran out and got one of the first production models
in .40S&W. It has a slide from S&W and the frame and trigger, etc from
Walther. Don't know what the NJ State Police problem was, but mine has
always been great. It has better (smoother) lines than the Walther, too.
