I have a B3-1 air rifle that was given to me. So far so good. I
would like to mount a scope. It has a very small grooved area 3/8
width and 3/4 long. I am a beginner and need some help with the type
of mount and a cheap scope to try....

If it's actually 3/8", that's a standard .22 mount dovetail, you can
get standard rings most anywhere. There is also an 11mm width that a
lot of air guns use. On a spring air rifle, a cheap .22 scope's
innards will disintegrate, I know from hard experience. No matter how
you crank down the clamps on the rings, the rings will shift along the
dovetail, too. There are scope stops sold to take care of that
problem. This outfit has inexpensive scopes that will withstand use
on a spring air rifle plus all the bits you need to mount it:

Lots of info on that site, too. I like the Leapers brand of scopes
for air guns like this one.

This is a pellet gun, don't use steel BBs or the rifling goes away. I
mention that because there are a lot of folks that think they can do
that. The outfit above frequently has bulk pellet sales, too. Or you
can hit Walmart and get a tin each of a bunch of different types to
see what shoots best.

You will end up spending more for the scope+rings than what the
original gun cost. I have one of these, they shoot hard enough to take
care of pigeons and such and are accurate enough to do the job.
Original cost was in the $20-25 range. Free would be even better.
When you order your scope and rings, make sure you get some chamber
oil as well, regular gun oil shouldn't be used for lubricating the
piston. Dieseling and damage WILL result. Have fun!

The B3-1 is am inexpensive $40 spring air gun. Two versions, a plain underlever that you probably have and an AK-47 lookalike side lever.

You need the same type of mounts used on a .22lr rifle. I'd recommend really good ones but they'll cost as much as the gun. Scopes need to also be able to stand up to the sharp recoil of an air rifle. Cheap scopes will bust. Again, even moderately priced ones will cost more than the gun.

Why don't you look at some of the major airgun suppliers and get the scope and mounts they recommend.
