It saddens me that newsgroups are going the way of the dinosaur. I find
them far superior to their replacement, web-based forums. Never been a
fan of how forums are organized, membership requirements, advertising, etc.

How do we increase traffic at rec.guns? How do we increase traffic at
newsgroups in general?

I see no solution to increased traffic. Un-moderating the group would
just bring in the crazies.

I have been into ng's for over 25 years and started watching their
demise when the isp's stopped subscriptions to the big providers. It
takes some computer literacy to subscribe free to news groups and things
like Facebook and Twitter have supplanted them.

I read somewhere that complaining without offering a solution is
whining. I have no solution but hope others do.

I am pretty sure that the younger gen want the splashy crap of the web
based stuff, and they can find it by googleing. We just want the facts this
simple format provides. The modern churches have the same problem in that
the youth want entermainment not just to be preached at and the main line
churches are having a big problem makeing the change fast enough. I
certainly like this format where words mater to context but we will lose
out in the end I am afraid. KB

That is a good point. I often went to news groups for help and advice
but now Dr. Google is faster.

To say something about guns, I went to Cabelas last week to cash in
points accumulated from my Cabelas credit card. Things looked good.
Ammo for plinking was cheaper then a pack of targets I bought.

Wish I knew. I really miss alt.binaries.sounds.radio.oldtime.

There is still a lot of traffic on the binaries groups, but you can't see
them on free servers like eternal september et al. Paid newservers are the
only ones who can afford the disk, bandwidth and maintenance that go along
with keeping a quality binaries feed going.

I used a paid service for awhile and I was able to acquire 100's of gigs of
music, audio books, language learning materals and other stuff.

I also remember the internet before it was spelled www...

I used to participate in the gopher scavenger hunt, I read my mail with
pine and my news with trn. I used Archie to find stuff to download and
Veronica for searching.

I also prefer newsgroups to any web-based community discussion forum.

<sigh>

I just want these damn kids to stay off my lawn!

Last week Easynews was offering a lifetime sign up for 9.95 a month. I had
their Big Gulp or whatever they called it account and switched to this saving
$20 a month. They claim unlimited d/l and 4000+ days retention. I am switched
to it, but too soon to see how the billing goes. I see no change in service
speed over the last week, but that is not enough time to tell.

I too miss the old radio groups. Still there are a lot of groups still active,
even some of the text groups. Science Fiction group is still 100+ a day last I
checked.

I use http://www.eternal-september.org for free access to newsgroups.
Fine for text (no binaries), newsreader of my choice (I never did like
Google Groups).
