I'm seriously considering a rifle build on a M700 SA in the obsolete
6.5mm Remington Magnum. Obsolescence and belted magnum problems aside,
I would like to use this rifle for long range plinking. My question
for those who have used the Wyatt boxes (3.01" short window box) to
extend the magazine length in a Remington short action. What receiver
mods would be necessary to feed the 6.4mmRM cartridges loaded up to
3.1 COAL using the various 6.5 mm VLD bullets available? Are there
significant issues with such an approach or should I just build on a
magnum long action and be done with it? I would really like to stay
with the short action if it's feasible because COAL of 3.1" is about
as long as I can foresee with this project but the Win Mag box is
perhaps a whole 1/4 " longer. I'd like to keep the trim length of the
SA if possible. Any constructive comments on the issues involved
would be appreciated. Thanks for your time and sharing you knowledge.

In my opinion the thing that killed the 6.5 Rem Mag was that it didn't
have enough magazine (or action) room for low drag bullets. The 6.5 Rem
Mag case is 2.170 and in a 2.8" magazine it can only shoot light and
medium bullets. it's still a good medium range hunting cartridge.
The Wyatts box extends the magazine to 2.990" but requires modifying the
action's magazine cutout (toward the rear), modifying the bolt stop, and
modifying the ejection port. That still only gives 0.82" of room for
the bullet outside of the case. That's enough for most of the heavier
6.5's, but needs careful machine work. I believe the Wyatts "window box"
magazine s for the non-belted magnums like the WSM and SAUM.
In my opinion the 6.5 RemMag would be better in a 3.4" Win 70 long
action with no machining required. (Like use by the factory for the 264
Win Mag). To be consider "long range" id think you'd also want at
least a 26" barrel.
I don't consider the 6.5 Rem Mag obsolete. Brass, dies, and reamers are
still readily available. I saw a clean 6.5 Rem Mag Rem 660 with the
factory laminated blond stock at a gunshow yesterday for "only" $1050.
I didn't buy it.
