On last Friday's episode of the X-Files agent Mulder was shown firing
his handgun at a gun range. The backstop seemed to be made of concrete
and it also appeared to be perfectly flat like a regular wall. The
other thing was that the ceiling seemed to be void of any baffles that
would normally protect you from a ricochet. Has anyone seen such an
indoor range or is this just another example of `Hollywood ignorance'?

The indoor, 22 rifle range at high school and college was much
like this. The HS range had a down-angled steel back wall, with
a sand trap on the floor, and I have no idea what the college
backdrop actually was. They had a wall up between you and the
actual "bullet-stopping" wall. I've seen that style before at
another HS range too.

X-files is usually pretty accurate with regards to FBI details
anyway....

More importantly, the target he was shooting at was a
large letter 'Q' printed on a white piece of paper. There's a
bit of a thread going on at alt.tv.x-files about why he was
shooting at the letter 'Q' -- someone said it was a "common
target design." Any comments?

Actually, it kind of reminded me of the NRA range.

Anyone know about this?

My wife commented that she had never seen so many rifles (the CARs and the MP5s)
on the X-files. I told her the order must have arrived and they decided to get
their money's worth from it right away.

The current official FBI target is the "Q" target.

The appearance of the target is like a silhouette of a roly-poly
old-style Coke bottle printed on a rectangular sheet
of heavy paper.

From what I've been told, the FBI's standard practice target is known
as the Q target. It is a gray background with an unshaded area shaped
sort of like a really wide bowling pin, or a reduced version of the
IPSC taget; its shape and size is roughly an outline of a desireable
taget area on a torso. There are no scoring lines. The ones the
local range has available have a Q about 3/4" tall in the center of
mass. I have no idea why they call it the Q target, but I don't know
why the NRA calls a B27 target a B27, either.

Sounds like a firearms illiterate asked which target an FBI agent
would use, then made his own Q target instead of buying one.

Oh, well, the X-Files crew seems to try harder, even if they do slip
badly sometimes.

The FBI teaches its agents to drop their guns whenever
faced with an alien/mutant/whatever?!? :)

Anyway, a couple of episodes ago, the one with the motor
oil alien, Scully was holding her gun on the guy who shot
her sister when the police show up. They tell her to drop
her gun, but what does she do? She hangs onto it and
rumages around in her pocket! That was a good episode,
but I would think real police would have shot her.

(BTW, I've heard that Chris Carter does take note
of what people say on alt.tv.x-files. I wonder if
he knows of our gun critiquing here on rec.guns :)

the FBI's targets are named Q Targets. no special reason having to do with
the x-files.

The FBI's current target is the "Q" target. They've moved away from the
older TransStar targets.

Does anyone have any experience with a gun cleaning product I saw on
this list a while ago? The name of the product was something like np7.
Used to be a web site but I can't find it.

D,

The product is MP-7, available from

Windfalls Distributing, Inc.
PO Box 54988
Phoenix AZ 85078
1-800-YES-4-MP-7
1.602.516.0414 (fax)

Contact them for an info pack.

If memory serves, a poster commented that MP-7 was OK but not the Holy
Grail of gun cleaning.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Walt

It's MP7, and it's getting rave reviews. My local shop _finally_ got some
small bottles in stock, and they are expecting large bottles soon. The
price is very nice on the large bottles.

I bought a couple of small bottles, but haven't had a chance to try it
yet. I'm going to give it my own "worst case test" on the compensator on
my old .45ACP IPSC gun, which was used with 152gr LSWCs at 1175 fps. I've
never got all the lead out of that comp, and the reviews suggest that this
stuff might just work.

Even if it's "only as good as" Shooters Choice, etc. for cleaning lead,
powder, and copper, it's better since it has no odor and is said to be
non-toxic!

I'll be trying it tonight.

It is MP7. I tried it and wrote a review of it which I posted to
rec.guns. It is an excellent product. No odor, Ozone depleting
substances, and cleans very very well. Just don't let it get on home
cold-blue jobs--it will take it off.

Also beware of spilling MP7 on stained finishes. First time I used
it was on a re-built M1 that I have. Took the finish right off, had
to redo the whole stock. As a cleaner, I find it OK - nothing
extraordinary, its big plus for me is that it's odorless.

I've used a product named Firepower NP7. It's manufactured by Muscle
Products Corp. Firepower is a very good lubricant and is also a pretty
good bore cleaner. I wouldn't use it indoors as it has a fairly strong
odor.
