Is it possible to convert my Beretta 92FS 9mm pistol to a 40 caliber?... In
other words does this model support interchangeability?.... I will check
around, thanks for your help.... JIM

Beretta made (makes?) a 92/96 combo that comes with two slides/barrels. The
change between the two only takes a few seconds. I think that it is a special
frame, so the slides will not fit on a regular 92 or 96 (that's what the dealer
said).

I would suggest contacting Beretta USA via their web site and ask this
question.

Best regards,
cfrick

To my knowledge, there is no conversion kit or process for converting
a 92FS to .40 S&W. Further, the model 96 barrels are not
interchangeable with the 92FS. Now that I think of it, I can think of
no example of ANY commercially sold gun by any company being
interchangeable between the 9mmP and .40 S&W, although there are some
examples of interchangeablility between .40 S&W and 357 SIG.
Hope this helps.

I too am interested in this. Would a Mod. 96 bbl. just drop in? I know that
the .40 mags from the 96 work in for 9mm in the 92FS. And a comparison of the
specs in the owners manual SEEM to show that everything else is the same.
Hmm...might need to change out the slide, too. The extractor might not work
right with the .40.

Any gunsmiths with an opinion?

Beretta makes a Model 96 9/40 combo... I almost bought one.

Bar-Sto makes some 9mm barrels for .40's, but you need to start with the .40
cal.
Sig's come to mind as one that you can get a 9mm, .357SIG, and .40 for. I
asked this question of them a few weeks back and the reply was in order to
get a 9mm/.40 swap, you need to start with the larger bore. They make a
heavier 9mm barrel that fits the outside diameter of the .40, but they can't
make a thinner walled .40 to fit the outside diameter of the 9mm. It no
doubt wouldn't be able to take the pressure.

Made. All the parts were standard Beretta, I think Centurion.

They will interchange onto a standard 9xfs frame.

The only problem with using .40 on a 92FS frame is the feedramp cut is too
small, and feeding may not work as well.

Switching to 9mm from a 96FS frame is trivial, if you have a 92 slide
assembly.

What you say is absolutely true, but it started out based on the Model
96 (.40 S&W), not the 92FS. As another poster said, one must start
with the larger bore. There probably are 9mmP barrels that can be
dropped into a Model 96, but not vice versa (that I know of, anyway).

You can put a 92 barrel in a 96 slide, but not a 96 barrel in a 92
slide. The 96 slide face is about 0.015 wider to accomodate the
larger rim size of the 40 case. I suspect that a 96 slide and barrel
will work on a 92 frame, but since I don't own that combination, I
dunno. I have shot a lot of 9mm from my 96. R guns sold the 92
barrels for $50, and they had the breech block roller installed. If
you buy a barrel, make sure it is complete.
