I am planning a trip to Williamsburg, Va in the Fall. Looking for
suggestions of interesting gardens to visit in that area. Thanks, Mary

Monticello in Charlottesville. Thomas Jefferson was a avid plant
collector and this is recreated.

Any public plantation along the James.

Jamestown has recreated 1st settler gardens.

Woodrow Wilson Birthplace in Staunton (pronounced 'Stan-ton'), Va
though about 2 hrs by auto an I-64. Nearby is Andre Viette's nursery
(off Va 608, about 5 miles north of the I-64/Fishersville interchange)

National Botanical Gardens in Washington, DC.

Back Bay NWR in the Va beach area, though not a garden
has many interesting native shore and marsh plants.

I went to Fredericksburg, VA in March--the weather wasn't the greatest but I
did get to visit Norfolk Botanical Gardens. I'm sure that it must be
beautiful right now. It wasn't for us because they had just had an
unexpected late frost. If we get back in that area again, we are certainly
going to go there! I see they have an address: www.communitylink.org/nbg
I believe that the National Botanical Gardens in Washington, D.C. are
closed for a couple of years because of intense re-doing.

Also be sure sure to visit the US National Arboretum which has more to see the
the US Botanic Garden which is mostly greenhouse collections, and Dumbarton
Oaks in Georgetown while in Washington. There is the Virginia State Arboretum
in Blandy, Virginia which has an excellent collection of Boxwood varieites and
unusual trees. Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's home in Charlottesville is an
example of one man's botanical garden representing an early 19th century
garden. The gardens at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg have grown a lot over the
years and may be worth seeing if you are in SW Virgina.
