What are some tips on successfully repotting germinateed seedlings? I
understand that basil is very finnicky when it comes to planting the seedlings.
I'm going to keep them in window boxes and not put them in the ground!

Thanks, Scott

Hello Scott,

You need to replant basil like you would tomato seedlings. Pick off
the lowest set of leaves and plant the seedlings so your soil covers
where the leaves were. Water well, then put mulch around the seedlings.
I like cypress mulch but I am sure you have a favorite you use. :)

They should do fine in containers (just remember they need lots of sun)
and you need to pick the flowers all summer until you are ready for them
to set seed. Good luck! -Kathryn

Wait until the seedling is slightly root bound. Then flood it. They need
lots of water and sunlight. Turn the pot upside down, taking care not to
break up the root ball. Plant it up to the first set of true leaves.
Water every couple of days and keep in FULL sun. Watch out for flowering.

Kia ora Scott,
The main thing to remember is try to get a good rootball and a fair
ammount of soil woth your seedlings you are transplanting. I use a
pencil to lever my babies but i have seen other people use a
knife. I have a good survival rate unless I have sown my seeds too
thickly.

seedlings three weeks ago. I planted around 100 seeds and between
failure to germinate or death upon repoting only about 90 survived!
After germination and the arrival of the second leaf on each seedling
I removed them from their pots, placing them in larger pot using a fork
with great care. In past years I have planted the seedlings both in
the garden and in pots and have had great success with both. However,
remember to pinch the flowers off before they bloom as the plants tend to
deteriorate quickly if you don't. Good Luck, Jeanne

I fill a bucket up with water and immerse the basil seedling to the top
of the pot just prior to repotting. I keep it in there until no more air
bubbles come up. Having the rootball good and moist seems to help guard
against transplant shock.
