I have always grown tomatoes and stargazer lilies, but aside from that I
am no gardener. That said, I have always admired cherry trees blossoming
in the spring, and finally got around to planting a bing cherry tree
today. I want to do everything I can to make sure that this is a
healthy and happy tree. I live in Omaha, NE, so we get COLD winters and
HOT summers, which I gather is just fine for cherry trees. It is
planted in a spot where it will get direct sun from sunrise to sunset.
There are four cherry trees three houses down from me, fruit trees in
every yard on my street, and there is no shortage of bees in my
neighborhood. Any advice you may offer is appreciated. Also, what are
the blossoms on a bing like, more pink or white? As cherries go is it a
pretty bloomer?
Thanks in advance.

Ok, I've done some more reading, and I gather I'm just a hair North of
where sweet cherries do best. Well, I see a lot of cherry trees around
here so I'm hoping it'll be ok anyway. I'm not concerned with them
bearing fruit so much as I am the blossoms in spring anyway. I have
also read a little about pollenation, and I have decided to add a Black
Tartarian to the back yard tomorrow so they can pollenate each other.
If anyone has anything to say about sweet cherry trees in zone 5 I would
appreciate it. I want to do everything I can to ensure these trees are
healthy and do well.
Thanks again in advance.

It's a good idea to plant another variety, but it won't pollinate anything.
Plants pollenize, bees will do the pollinating... if you have bees, that is.
Make sure you have bees.

If your nurseryman told you plants pollinate, you'd be wise to find a
nurseryman that knows his business.

Good luck.

I got my dwarf cherry trees from Raintree. 2 are bing type, one is sour
(my husband!). they have white flowers. only my two peach trees (Bay
Laurel) are loaded with REALLY pink blossums right now. I didnt know if
the peach and asian pear dwarf trees would make it in 100 gallon rubbermaid
tubs over winter, but they did with no wrapping or anything special. They
are all blooming their butts off and I cant wait to see how much set there
is. I am very close to "the lake" so I dont think there is going to be a
late frost. anyway... it is quite a show. got people all over the
neighborhood asking about em.. even the mailman is asking me! for gardening
advice. wowowo.. I will have to let you know later if much fruit sets
(this is only their second year). Ingrid
