Here is an idea for natural insect control. Using the liquid that is leached
from tobacco to spray on infected plants. Simply buy a tobacco product (I
know, I hate supporting the tobacco companies too) soak the tobacco leaves
in water, put the water into a spray bottle, and spray the leaves down with
solution. In theory it seems like this may work. Isn't the nicotene a
natural pest control for the tobacco plant?
Any thoughts,
Wade

What are the chances that you will introduce tobacco mosaic virus by doing
so. One of the advantages of hydroponics is that it avoids many of ills of
soil gardening.

With screening over the vents, I have had few insect problems in my little
greenhouse except for ants. I do not see much in the way of aphids though.

I have not been very diligent in removing tomato suckers. Many of the leaves
seem to turn yellow to brown to dead even though I still get nice tomatoes.
What is th cause of this die-off?

It will work, but you must dilute it. I do not recall his name, but the master
gardener has a receipe for it. He adds one TBS of mollasses, one can of beer.
he uses a small pinch of tobbaco that is soaked in water and diluted in a liter
bottle along with the other ingredients. I tried it, and it worked. Problem
is, Have to spary too often. The bugs hate it!!

I mix bone meal, fish emulsion in a 5 gallon bucket, along with greensand when
I can get it, let it sit for a few days and then dilue with a sprayer to 1TBS
per galon to feed the plants. After I got the master gardener's receipe using
tobacco, I added it to the 5 gallon bucket. Surprisingly, while the stew sat a
few days, no fly came near. Without the tobacco, they were a problem.

Your logic is correct, and there did used to be some nicotine based
insecticides on the market.

There you go. If Jerry Baker, "America's Masturbating Gardener", has a
recipe for it, you know it must be a bad idea. All of his nitwit potions are
unscientific "snake oil" and potentially dangerous to plants and people.
Nicotine was one of the early insecticides but it has been pulled from the
market for a variety of reasons, including its extreme toxicity to humans.

sounds like a good idea to me but most tabacco products are going to
contain all kinds of harmful crap, that has been added to it.

It's a well-known, and ANCIENT remedy. Works best with plug

The problem is that your veggies taste like "Old Mule" chaw.
