The was planning to grow in a bare area of my lawn from St. Augustine plugs. I
have not identified a source yet but the local Lowe's has Palmetto. Now, I
thought Palmetto was a type (cultivar, I think is what you experts may call it)
of St. Augustine. The guy there said Palmetto is better for our climate than
the normal St. Augustine.

Am I correct in that Palmetto is St. Augustine?

What Is your opinion of Palmetto?

What about the other strains of St. Augustine (Raleigh, Floratam, Floratine,
Bitter Blue, Roselawn, etc.)?

thanks in for any info

Palmetto is St. Augustine. I understand it tolerates lower cutting height than
most. Raleigh is reported to the most cold tolerant. I don't know much about
the others.

Dean,

Palmetto is a variety of St. Augustine. It so new very few folks
have tried it. It's growing well for me in Texas, but that's of little
use to you in Georgia.
The other varieties you mention are less cold tolerant than
Raleigh, Palmetto is supposed to be hardier still (we'll see).

It is a native that is taking the lawn people by storm. I have heard nothing
but great reviews on it. Here is a web site from those that found it.
http://www.sodsolutions.com It has the history of this grass and how it grows.

Palmetto is a cultivar of St. Augustine. In South Florida Floratam is the most
popular because of the chinch bug tolerance.
