My friend has a bunch of roses, and as she was pruning them, she noticed
that some of the canes had hollowed, brownish cores with ants inside.
She cut those canes way back, but what could be causing the rotting
(which is what it sounds like to me)? She said the outside of the canes
looked fine.

I bow to your collective wisdom.

Hollow canes are the result of cane borers.
Cutting the canes back until you see solid pith
is the correct fix. You should guard against
borer entry into canes by sealing the end
with glue, etc. whenever you cut a bloom.

Look also at web page below, for section
entitled "ROSE BORER" near page bottom.
