I'm getting a stone wall built and want one or two interesting
gates. I either need to find patterns/ideas or dealers in the N.E --
if you've got leads to either, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

my cousin-in-law is a sculptor working out of Florida. he works in recycled
copper and makes garden trelis' and is currently working on a commission for
a set of doors for a house. he uses southwestern motifs but is very
versatile, but ive never discussed his money matters w/him so i don't know
what a commission would set you back. he can be contacted at sja...@aol.com

I was looking through an Ortho book called How to Design & Build Fences &
Gates. I can't really recommend this book, but I am sure there are better ones
at your local library that will meet your needs. However, this book did raise
a few questions: do you want privacy (solid) or open pattern, wood or metal,
plain or decorative, security or no security? I have built 3 wooden gates,
mostly for privacy. I have kids, so I oversize all of the hardware, yet I made
the door light weight, so they would be easy to use. To me, the most
interesting gates are those made of old garden tools, shop machinery and
automobile parts. Good luck.

Antique stores generally sell them. I've seen several nice ones show up at
auctions also. They aren't something I'm looking for so I don't remember
where exactly I've seen them lately, but they are around. Prices vary
tremendously depending on who thinks they can do exactly what with them.

If you're willing to take a trip to northern Dutchess/Ulster Co., I can
give you a list of likely places to start looking.

Old metal beds make unique gates. Look at garage sales and antique
stores for these.

Find a public library in your area that has the Los Angeles Times. In
the Real Estate section (published only on Sundays) about 2-4 weeks ago,
there was an article about gates with photos of what the editors
considered to be some of the best in the area. These included custom
built, recycled, and funky. Gates that gave good privacy and gates that
merely created a feeling of separation. Gates that stood out by
themselves and gates that repeated the design themes of their adjacent
walls.

Unfortunately, the Times on-line generally reflects only the most recent
edition.
