Thanks, Zhan, for the set-up, but I'm sure you'll throw me a stone when I
start to sink. Actually, Deb, Zhan is the real mistress, but she has learned
to delegate.... VBG
Anyway - This is what I learned from HER about gardenias:
Gardenias never like to dry out completely; they promptly lose leaves and buds
when this happens and die if water deprivation continues for a couple of days.
Put a pan under the plant and water from the bottom because they also like
high humidity. (Some people suggest setting them on stones in a pan of water.)
They thrive (wrong term - grow better) in bright light and will tolerate some
morning sun but do not like much beyond that. Fertilize every three to four
weeks with half strength Miracid and omit fertilizing from November through
January. Newly purchased budded woody plants will sometimes lose buds until
the become acclimated to their new environment. Transplanting while budded
will also often cause bud drop.
White flies and spider mites love gardenias. Practice daily (at least weekly)
bug patrol and promptly take care of any infestation. White flies are
particularly miserable.Final words of wisdom that I learned from Zhan, the
Mistress of Gardenias: "Anyone who knowingly purchases a gardenia is a
masochist!" Refer any and all complaints about this advice to her. She will
happily correct mistakes. :0
Good luck!
John
See why I delegate. You're letter perfect.

I hope you send any difficult inquiries about gardenia culture to Zhan.
My post only repeated what she taught me. Her knowledge about gardenias
knows no bounds, and no question is too difficult for her to answer.
She IS the mistress of gardenia culture.
