Is it too late in the spring to dig and separate shasta daisy roots? I
don't want to kill the poor thing.

I have divided shastas as late as June and they have still survived. Not
only did they survive, but they bloomed until fall!

I'm in zone 5 - SW Ontario

If you water them well after transplanting (until they are established),
you should have no problem. Shasta daisies are easy to divide.

My stars!! I didn't know a Shasta Daisy could die!! I have pulled them up and
by not getting up all of the scraps, found them to establish themselves right
there. Needless to say they are all over the yard...in the lawn! I really
don't think there is a warm weather time of the year when you can't divide
Shasta's. (Think of dandelions) Since they are in bloom now, the seeds will
take up where the baby plants are moved to......just don't drop any...

A lot of this depends on where you live. Here in Austin, z8b, they do
pretty well, except in full, late day sun. They do not spread in the
manner you describe, although I wish they did.
