I hope this group is appropriate, I couldn't find any lawn group.

My lawn was established last fall. It is kentucky tall fescue. A lot
of the wheat straw that was used when the lawn was new has taken root.

The guy at Home Depot said that the heat of the summer would kill it.
Does this sound right? A couple of weeks ago I spread fertilizer and
pre-emergent and also lime. Any thoughts? I'm concerned that watering
the lawn is going to help the straw survive.

THe wheat straw didn't root--it was the wheat seeds mixed in with the
straw-just keep the lawn mowed-it is doubtful that wheat will be able to
survive repeated mowings.

Wheat is an annual that that only grows from seed and it should initially
look like coarse grass. If you keep mowing it and don't let it go to seed,
it should die out by mid summer. -Olin

Had to laugh at this one -last year I used wheat straw as a mulch to cover
newly prepared beds that wouldn't be used until this year. A week later I
had what I guess is wheat growing all over the beds. I think it died over
the winter (zone 5) but I have a horror of it coming back. You have my
sympathy.
Good luck.
