Eric - as far as I can remember, it's the lily of the valley. They LOVE
them there.

Gee, you wouldn't be a Soccer fan now by any chance?

The flower you refer is "la fleur de lis", the lily of the Valley.

But it is not the "national flower" of France. This flower was choosen
by the former kings of France as a symbol of the perennity of the
kingdom. Just remenber we cut their head off two centuries ago. Ironical
isn't it ?

Elisabeth is right, this is "Lilium Regale", and I am sure you will find
some bulbs by your local provider.

The only plant symbol choosen by the France are shown on our money.
It's olive-tree leaves and wheat, chosen as symbol of prosperity.

Our National symbol is a women named "Marianne", on a caracter of the
French Revolution reputed for her courage.

I thought the fleur de lis was was an iris. Let me look this up.
Isn't the spelling La fleur de *Lys*?

Lily of the valley is known as muget.

The fleur de lys is a symbol. It represents an iris.

Hope this adds to the confusion.

Bob's right. A fleur-de-lis/fleur-de-lys (my dictionary gives both
spellings) is an iris. Lily of the Valley is something like 'muguet' in
French and is cultivated on a large scale in the Loire Valley to be sold
throughout France on Mayday as a good luck charm.

Apparently, getting Lily of the Valley to flower in time to be sold on
Mayday (the crop is worthless if it arrives a week too early or a day
too late) is something of an art. The plants need to be gently heated by
keeping them in plastic tunnels if Spring is late, or shaded from the
sun and exposed to the cold night air if Spring is early.
